1977 Standard Beetle For Sale ~ 3,200 Original Miles.
The car has not been detailed, it has had a good bath, but a good professional
detail would make it even more
impressive. The car is downright amazing though and the closer you look,
the more amazing it gets.
This is about as close to showroom as you can get... a bit of a time warp.
30 years later...and it still smells new.
How often do you run across something like this?
Uhhh...never?
Pretty nice wouldnt you say?
Ok lets get down to the documentation here.
When it was first sold by the dealership it was in October 1986 and the
car had 127 miles on it.
It was sold as used due to the age and mileage.
The dealer was Colley Volkswagen (and Subaru) in Glendora California on
Route 66.
Here's a letter from November 86 requesting a smog check.
There are a good few receipts from the late 80's and 90's for service work
done while the car was in use.
All of these support the mileage.
Here's the flawless owners manual...clean!
The odometer at the time of my inspection was 3,290 miles!
The interior is as flawless as you would expect...even the seat padding
is sound and firm.
Super clean in the corners...all factory fresh.
Door panels.
Carpet shows no wear.
Even around the pedals it is like new.
The factory map light.
Another shot showing the carpet around the pedals.
Dash is gorgeous.
Radio block off plate in place.
Inside of the glove box is all fuzzy and new.
Door jams are dreamy.
Production sticker.
Service sticker from 1992 showing just 1175 miles on the odometer.
Original finish on the latches is still bright and shiny.
Headliner is so white and clean it's scary.
Excellent indeed.
Rear seat has probably never had a butt in it.
Under the seat is amazingly clean.
Sorry for the blurry photo...I was so excited looking at this car I must
have been shaking!
Note the original jack and just how clean this all is in here.
Seat belts.
Not even a butt divot in the drivers seat...awesome!
OK back outside to the shiny bits...
Under the hood is also impressive.
original spare has never seen the ground.
Original under hood light is ever so cool (and functional)
Bright cad plating on the latches.
No signs of this wheel ever being mounted on the car.
Clean in here and no detailing has been done.
Get in here with a little wax and it will be showtime!
There is a push-up dent in the floor of the spare tire well where some
schmuck with a floor jack gave it a pump.
It cracked the paint in here...a couple careful pops with a rubber mallet
and its back where it needs to be
but it's a flaw worth mentioning even though nobody will ever see it.
Clean
Check out this photo of the back side of the spare...awesome!
Take notes restorers...
And another detail to verify the mileage...the factory applied sealer on
the threads of the speedo cable
is still intact in all locations.
Impressed yet?
Now the paint has an ever slight dullness to it...its obviously shiny and
glossy but
it does look a hair bit dim. I think a good pro detailing will help, but
I cant say the exterior is flawless.
Ok lets see the engine...
Here it is. Again there has been no detailing done here and with a careful
cleaning it will simply sparkle.
It runs excellent by the way...as smooth and as tight as you could ever
dream of.
The original tires are a little bit scary, but put on some fresh radials
and this is a dream car to drive.
Here you can see the light layer of dust and grime on the engine.
You can also see just how bew everything is...check out how bright the
cad plating is on the mechanics
and the proper blue stickered coil.
Under the hood deal looks like new.
Underneath is all dreamy original undercoating.
Just a hair bit of road grime and dust.
If you wanted to show this car it would be fun to detail all the suspension
up.
Check out the plating on the screws and the inspection number on the frame
head... a little wipe down and this
will look phenomenal.
OK, back up to the shiny parts again.
Very close inspection of the car revealed two spots where the paint has
been touched up...the drivers side rear fender
and the passenger side front fender. The paint gets a little blotchy in
spots due to these repairs and the age of the paint.
Silver paint from the 70's wasnt known for longetivity even in the best
situations.
This car has seen the best situations and there are still some age related
deteriorations.
Check out the VWOA bumper guards.
And even cooler the Wolfsburg Cresh on the back caps...Ive never even seen
this before!
(the current owner worked at a VW dealership in 1977...he remembers them)
Now the wheels are definitely originals with original tires but I dont
believe they are original to this car.
The reason I say so is that the tire wear on the fronts here is far more
than 3200 miles.
The best we can figure is that the car was put in storage at the dealership
and the wheels removed at some point.
There were other cars in this dealer's back room and the wheels must have
been swapped out.
Original square wheel weights.
The valve stem caps have the "S" on them.. talk about a silly
anal original part eh?
Metzeler bias ply tires.
I would most certainly suggest changing the tires before driving this car
any long distances.
Save the original rubber though and bribe the tire jockey to keep those
square wheel weights and valve caps!
Another detail...the California emissions decal in the window.
Factory sunroof car by the way!
Here's the one fender that has had a little touch up.
It doesnt jump right out at you but when you stick your face up as close
as I did you see what's going on.
Here you can see a spot where the touch up has peeled just a bit.
Clean door hinges
Lenses are amazingly clean and bright.
Wow!
So...there you go.
An amazing all original extremely low mileage car.
It has a couple flaws but they are small and the sheer quality and cleanliness
of the car far overshadows its small flaws.
Its a very impressive find.
