1961 Australian Right Hand Drive Beetle Sedan

Very interesting car here. At first glance it just looks like a cool accessorized basic Beetle
but as you get in closer you realize that it is much more interesting than that.

This Beetle was built in Australia...not Germany.
While many of the parts indeed of German heritage, the construction of the car was done "down under".
And as you look at the details of it, you see many attributes that are unique to the Australian built cars.

While much of the parts were sourced from VW in Germany, to cut costs for shipping, many local sources were found
for parts as well. And these parts quite often are just a bit different than their German cousins.

This particular car is a slightly faded original example that has had a little accessorizing and mild tweaking
by it's California owner to make it an even more unique ride.

There has been some paint touch up done to the car, but a good portion of it is still the original finish.
The car has a nice patina to it...and looks like it has stories to tell.

Headlights are the bulb type, not sealed beam.

Peanut style turn signals.

Wolfsburg crest hood emblem.

South Australian plates.
Bumpers are factory Australian units.

Very cool accessory sun visor.

Great looking side view mirror.

These wheels are very rare South African "Sprint Stars"...very very hard to find.
Nicely restored with nice new treads on them too.

The body is overall in decent shape...some fade to the paint and lots of little chips and scratches.

Rear wheels wraped with thin whitewall rubber.

Rear window blind is another nifty addition.

Notice anything different here in the back?

South Australian plate hiding under the California one...neeat Royal Auto Association decal.

The taillights are quite unique...at first glance they look like the 62-67 models but they are smaller and the
lens come out to be much more verticle on the back side... way too cool.

The bumbers are unique as well...note the thin rubber gaskets where the overrider bars bolt up as well as where
the bumper guard hits the blade...and yes...Im sure these are factory and not a cheesy aftermarket bumper.

Sight down the side.

Another good wheel shot.

Running board rubber is original...note how the grroves stop short of the end of the board.

Frot wheels are tucked in a fair bit...a 5" narrowed from beam from JerFab
and 2.5" dropped spindles too. The original front beam is included with the sale should the new owner
wish to return the car to stock height.

Wood slat roof rack covers the nicely faded roof.

An original German rack it appears...

Swamp Cooler has been modified to mate up on the Left side of the car (normally they hang on the right)
It looks totally factory, but is a customized deal.

South Australia inspection sticker.

Nice altitude adjustment...looks pretty sweet.
But nothing that couldnt be put back to stock if desired.

Engine...yes...it has an engine...and it's as cool and interesting as the rest of the car.

Oops...quick detail note...there is a little rust in the bottom edge of the engine lid...

OK...back to the powerplant.
This is a very tricked out 40 horse engine that features 85.5 pistons and cylinders and a 69 stroke crank.
Basiclly a hard core big bore 40 horse with about 400 miles on it since rebuild.

Period performance bits are all over in here such as the cool air cleaner on top of the two barrel carb.|
Check out the trick oil filler/breather with VW logo cap.

Holley Bug Spray carb and manifold.

Manifold is cool and chrome, engine tins have all been powder coated.

Bosch 010 mechanical advance distributor.

Cool oil filter set up, Scat crank pulley.

Gene Berg deep sump...everything very clean.
The transmission is freshly rebuilt as well with freeway flyer gearing that let it cruise
comfortably at about 70-75 mph on the freeway.

Chassis is very solid.

Very nice and solid and proper under here.

Fender wells look solid as well.

Front apron shows some minor signs of bodywork repair but is very cleanly done.

Under the hood is a nice bit of matching luggage.

Hood latch was not installed at the time of the photos... spare looks good.

OK...cock your head to the left a little and see if you can spot the kangaroos.

Spare tire well

Body number

The backside of the dash for anyone questioning the originality of the RHD...this is not a custom deal.

Cool.

Good hood...typical slight crack on the left side of the hood forward of the hood prop

Hood closes well

Inside the magic continues.

Original upholstery on the seats...very cool vintage headrests.

Rear seat

Original headliner

Not too shaby considering it's age.

Right hand drive ...ever so cool.

Awesome radio

Door panels look nice

Some minor rust going on behind the sill and corner plates here

Very cool car with man many unique qualities.
Good runner and driver, well equipped with the coolest accessories, neat history
and something that you wont see very often here in the US.
