1966 Brasillian Built Beetle Sedan

At first glance this very pretty car appears to be just a "regular old Beetle".
But it doesnt take more than a moment to realize that there is something quite different about this car.
First you are struck by it's impeccable condition, then by it's obvious originality, and then by the details
that tell the VW nut like myself that there is even more to the story.

As many of you are well aware, Volkswagen built Beetles in more places than just Germany.
We all know of the Mexico built cars of recent day, and we've even seen a few Australian built Beetles come through the shop.
The country of Brazil is well known for it's replacement parts as well as some of the odd VW models
that were produced down there for the local market (Brasilia, SP2, etc). But little is ever said about the production line Beetles
built in Brazil...especially ones dating back to the 1960s.

This deep red example is a 1966 model, built in Brazil and held there in caring hands since new until it's recent
importation to the US by it's Brasillian born owner. She brought the car into the States with plans of keeping it,
but an unfortunate turn of events required her to return to Brazil to attend to family matters and ithe car was sold to a
local Southern California collector who has owned it for just a bit over a year..
These photos were taken about a year ago and there have been some very minor changes to the car
which are noted in the text below. The condition of the car has not changed to any noteable level from what you see here.
Current day photos will be supplied to prospective buyers upon request just so you know Im not messing with you.

The condition of the car is very nice and best of all it is all original.
Paint, interior, trim, mechanicals, etc...all original bumper to bumper.
Its rare for any car to survive this well in any part of the world, but for a Beetle in Brazil this
is simply unheard of. The vast majority of VWs down there (as well as in other parts of the world) get
driven to the ground. This car spent most of it's life in a small town called Limeira under the ownersip of
a wealthy ranch owner who drove the car sparingly, the car has clocked just 58,700 kilometers since new
(thats only 36,474 miles...wow!)

Extremely straight body, and a glassy shine from the original paint.

Simply Gorgeous.
There are some very slight paint wear spots and of course a few chips and scratches
but for an original finish it is quite nice indeed!

Excellent fit and finish, never in an accident of any sort.
All original parts intact...just as it left the factory.

The headlights are non sealed beam units, with fluted lenses stamped with Brazil markings.

The original license plate from the small town of Limeira....unfortunately no longer on the car...car now has California plates.

Check out the hood emblem...different than the German ones...a wider indentation within the body of the letters.

Check out the antenna...also unique to the Brazil market.

Under the hood is amazingly clean.

Look at the hood latch...still shining with the original plating.
Also notice the stamping on the front apron...this is early style stuff...pre 59 by
German standards...with the "H" style pattern...but not as crisp...very interesting.

Super super clean spare tire well...this is all original in here too...awesome.
Notice the lack of access plate on the passenger side of the bulkhead...another odd difference.

Very clean and straight...no damage ever.

Here's the body tag...how cool is that?

Hood hinges and the hood as well are of an earlier style.
It's most likely the result of old tooling from Germany being sent to Brazil and re-used.

The filler neck on the fuel tank is smaller in diameter than the German version
and the cap differs as well, being made of aluminum rather than steel.

Original jack and tool kit appears to be almost un-used.

In the rear the car looks superb as well.
Note the bumpers with the black plastic gaskets under the overriders... these are factory parts.

Very nice accessory engine vent trim...this is different slightly from the ones we see today.
The clips that hold it in place are sepearate stampings and a Brasillian manufacturers marking sits dead center on the bottom.
(NOTE: this part has been removed from the car as have the travel stickers...)

Interesting factoid about the license plates in Brazil...they are locked to the car by government officials
with a cable and security tag (seen here in red). This helps prevent auto theft and plate swapping.
Unfortunately when the car was registered here in California , the plates
were removed and are not being sold with the car.
A somewhat similar plate from Limera Brazil is included for display.
size is larger and the color is yellow and black. Car now has California plates.

Yes...that's a 36 horse engine...the original "numbers matching" engine to the car.
And it runs and drives like a dream. Mechanically it is top notch.
Its interesting that the cars in Brazil still retained the 36 horse engine...but 12 volt electrics in 1966.
With the German built Beetles, the 36 horse engine stopped in 59 and 12 volt electrics didnt start until 67.

The engine is the original one to the car...all numbers match.

Bosch of Brazil BR 8 distributor.

Aluminum cased Bosch of Brazil ignition coil.

Check out the small diameter 12 volt generator.

Very very clean engine compartment...again notice the "H" rear apron...not seen on German cars
after around 1961 (I think)

Ultra clean and dry under the engine...this car has been impeccably maintained.

Extremely solid original floor pans...no rust ever.

Excellent...

Cant ask for much nicer than this.

Check out the fender wells...amazing...and the dirt here wipes right off.

Front wells are the same...excellent.

Bias ply tires with whitewall insert rings.
Tires have some age cracking but are being run with tubes for safety.

Like a jewel...the photos really dont do the car justice... it's even more stunning in person.

The interior is near spotless as well, and of course all original.

Very very clean.

The seat upholstery is unique, with 1964 era cloth in the center and smooth light grey vinyl aound the edges.
Seats are in excllent shape.

Rear seat just as nice.

Rear cargo area is super clean and features a very interesting textured material instead of carpet.

The seat strap still in place and in wonderful condition.
Here you can see the material up close too...neat stuff.

Headliner is excellent.

Very very minor discoloration from age, definitely to be expected as it's the original stuff.

Gorgeous door sill trims.

Check out the detail of the stamping...super cool.

Rubber floor mats still look like new, as does the material on the sides.
(not carpet interestingly...another difference)
Also note the size of the shifter boot...larger than the German version.

Another cool accessory trim piece.
Here you can see the detail of the material on the sides...looks like square weave carpet, but rubbery.

All cars in Brazil must have a fire extinguisher on board...here's the one for this car.
Originally it was mounted here next to the driver's left leg. It has now been removed, but is included with the sale.
Also included is another original bamboo parcel tray, trimmed to fit around the fire extinguisher when in place.

Another detail of the shifter.
Heater control knob is missing.

Three point seat belts in the front are factory and have a very interesting rail on which the forward portion of the belt attaches.

Dashboard simply looks like new.
58,700 original Kilometers on the odometer. (That's only 36,474 miles!!!)

Fuel gauge reads "Gasolina"

Awesome horn button...another original item to a Brasilian car.

Check out these nifty vent trims...also an original part.

Locking steering column and ignition.

Turn signal switch is different as well.

Door panels look just like the German versions however the material is thinner and not as tightly fit to the panel.
These are the original ones to the car and are in pretty nice shape. Just a little warpage and the pocket material is splitting a bit.

Passenger side excellent as well.

Factory battery cut off switch under the rear seat bottom.

Back outside to see the overall vision again...gotta keep things in perspective...seeing all the details can be a little dizzying.

Original owner manual folder...from the dealership in Limeira where the car was first sold.

The full array of manuals and even a key pouch from the original dealership.

The certificate of guarantee establishes the date the car was first sold (June 6th 1966)
and the chassis and engine numbers which are still intact.
I also like the punch stamp on the page with the VW logo and the chassis number...

Yeah...what he said... this is the back of the service book.

Inside the owners manual it is interesting to see that the images are of the Brasilian built car...this photo here
shows the seat upholstery, horn button and if you look closely, even the little chrome trim on the defroster vents.
All standard equipment apparantly.

This decal in the rear window is from the vintage car club of Limeira,
where the car was first sold and where it spent it's whole life.
Obviously owned by an enthusiast it's whole life.

This sticker in the rear window, loosely translated means
"A Vintage Auto is like a friend of your wife...you can look, but keep your hands off."
That pretty much says it all dont you think?
(This sticker is no longer on the car by the way...)

Pop out rear quarter windows.
Very fun travel decals from exotic locales in the windows.
The car hasnt travelled to all these places, but it looks cool just the same.
(Note: These stickers have been carefully removed , but are included in the sale)

Some sort of Police/Military decal from Sao Paulo on the windshield.
This may be an inspection sticker of some sort...I am unsure, but it sure looks cool.

Pop out windows...apparantly a standard factory item in Brazil in 66.

More unique trimmings...check out these stone guards!

There is some minor paint checking here on the rear apron...and a couple spots of touch up paint.

A small chip in the paint on the fender edge...lovingly touched up but visable if you get real close.
There are a few similar spots like this around the car.

A similar chip on the passenger rear fender.

Another very cool accessory...these are chrome plated steel.

All the glass is original and of local origin.

In closing this is an excellnt example of a very unique and rare Beetle built in Brazil.
Here in the US, this is extremely rare. In my 20 years of working with old VW's this is the only
one of this vintage that I have ever come across. And it's condition, being a very low mileage
and completely original example makes it even more incredible of a find.
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity...you wont see another one like this for sale.
