1969 VW Beetle Sedan For Sale

Here's a bit of a time warp car. A project car from the 1980's that was frozen in time and never completed.
The owner has had the car since 1977 and in the 80's when the Cal Look scene was in full swing here in Southern California
he decided it was time to update the car and to bring it up to the style of the day.
As is quite common with such endeavors, he never finished the car, but what is not so common is that
the car just sat in good ol "Mom's" garage for over 18 years.
And the cool part about it is that now it's coming back in style like an old sport coat in your Dad's closet.

The 80's saw an interesting change in the custom VW scene.
The performance aspects while still important, became less of a focus and style and fashion
came to the forefront. This car was well on it's way to being quite the 80's fashion machine.
I can just picture this pulling up at the local cruise spot Angelo's and some cat stepping out
with his Members Only jacket and his hair pomped up and fluffy...

The quality of the paint and body on this car is super super nice and it has withstood the test of time quite well.
The owner is a former auto detailer and his knowledge and care for automotive finishes is obvious.
This guy has spent some serious hours on polishing this car...
it's a shame it was never completed and never saw the show circuit.

In any case, now here it sits waiting for someone to take it and finish it and have some fun.
Lots of time and money has been spent on the car and with some tinkering and finishing it will be a very
cool car to cruise around with and have some fun...and it's priced very reasonably so you will have some
room to throw money at it and not get buried in the project financially.

The bumpers and headlight rings and door handles have all been poweder coated in black and they look just great.
Turn signals are in the front bumper which was a popular choice of the day.

A few dings and light scratches here and there from storage, but nothing major.

Really nice glassy smooth panels.
Look at how nice that reflection is in the paint...and this was on a cloudy day.

Center Line wheels with Pirelli P3 Cinturato tires...a classic combination indeed.

And they are real Center Lines. not cheap copies.

One piece windows of course for that clean look.
These are a little floppy in there and bneed some "tuning".

Running board on the drivers side is a little loose... just kinda hung in place.

Vitaloni Baby Tornado mirrors...back in the 80's when I worked at a VW parts place in Anaheim we sold
so many of these it was mind blowing. If you didnt have Baby Tornados or Baby Turbos on your VW
you were definitely out of fashion.

Black powder coat trim.

One small trim hole has popped open on this door, everything else looks solid.

Windshield is cracked but the Cal Look rubber still looks like new.

Good tread on the tires but the sidewalls are starting to show some minor age cracks from time.
Fortunately the car has been stored indoors and covered the entire time
so most everything is still in fine shape.

A little paint chip and a very light ding in the roof from garage storage.

Here's another small scratch.

Here's a bigger ding and some paint chipping from installing the one piece windows long ago.

There is quite the thick coat of paint on here but the shrinkage has been minimal.
You can see just a hint of hairline cracking in the deep corners but that's only if you look
real hard...the paint has held up amazingly well for being in storage so long.

Here's another flashback...both quarter windows nd the rear window have classic 1980's
Hawaiian Island Creations stickers on them...and they look just like new.
This might not mean anything to most folks but these Hawaiian themed surf companies
back in the 80's were all the rage and for some reason it was just the in thing to put their logos on your car.
I remember having Maui and Sons stickers and these HIC stickers as well on a couple of my cars back then...
(am I getting old yet?? ... getting all misty eyed about some silly sticker?...OK...I'll stop now)

Oh yeah!
The classic 80's California plate with the Sunset on the top... and you just had to have a personalized plate to be cool!
This is a good one... not the last tag on the registration was 1989.
The car has been in the garage since about 1987 or 88 according to the owner.

Nice looker!

The dashboard needs completing but a lot of work has been done in here so far.

These seats look familiar but Im not exactly sure... possibly the fabled "Prelude" seats
that were real hot in the late 80's and beyond?
They are in nice shape.

Love the mesh headrests!

Rear seat area is kinda jumbled with a padded speaker deck and pad below.
It looks real loose in this photos and is a little dusty as well... this could be tightened up and reinstalled to look much better.

Excellent headliner.

Just like new.

Carpet kit has been loosely installed.
Gotta love the graphic equalizer for the stereo under the dash... back in the 80's the stereo craze was really in it's infancy
compared to today. Things were loud and had lots of lights and buttons, but compared to today's systems they
sure sound nasty...

Classic Johnny's Speed and Chrome trigger shifter!
Johnny's Speed and Chrome was a So Cal shop the was quite the candy store for the VW nut.
This guy must have spent every paycheck there for quite some time.

Another classic 80's item...the Dino steering wheel.

Dash needs completing, the stereo head unit is gone and it has been trimmed back for a pretty big unit.

Door panels are very nice and are done to match the seats.

Oh the power plant! Cant forget that.
1776cc engine witrh dual 40 Weber carbs and enough chrome to blind you on a sunny day.
This is the type of set up that you would see on the So Cal streets so often in the 80's and quite often
folks would run with their decklid off the car just to show off all that "bling".
The engine was last test run about four years ago and has been cranked over by hand every couple of months just to keep things
from getting sticky. The owner states that the engine has less than 5000 miles on it
( he had the engine built for the car before he started the restoration and drove it a bit then...it has gone nowhere in the last 18 years)
Plan on some tuning and tweaking and probably some gasket replacing...the main flywheel seal looks to be leaking a bit
from just sitting. Basically the car is being sold as is where is as a non running car.
(but I'd be willing to bet with a fresh battery and some ether sprayed down the carbs the beast would fire up)

Dual "Quiet Pack" exhaust was another 80's staple.

You can see the pushrod tubes are still shiny and the engine isnt a big leaker...quite dry in fact.
Billstein shock all the way around by the way.

External oil filter mounted up in the rear fender well.

Brand new looking disc brake set up in the front, new steering box as well, never driven on these though...just sitting.
Steering column needs a bushing up at the top side by the steering wheel as it rattles around quite a bit when you grabn the wheel.

Adjustable front beam and you can just see the fresh steering box peeking out in this photo.

Floor pans are very solid underneath but have been pushed up just a little.

Same on the passenger side...very solid but dented up a bit.

Fresh looking fuel tank, a big amplifier for the stereo and a mess of wires.
I would suggest ripping all this out and re-wiring the car...it's pretty sloppy.
In fact this is one of the big reasons the owner never finished the car...he was stumped by the wiring.
Such a silly thing but I understand his frustrations...Ive never been a big fan of electrical work myself.
But there are many guys out there that can whip this into shape in a day's time.

Spare tire well is very solid and pretty straight.

Hood latch is missing. Might be in the loose parts in the car though...didnt look.

So... there you have it.
Its a great car with tons of potential. Lots of the hard and expensive work has been done, now it just needs finishing
and to be revived from it's long term storage. Dont expect to come by and pour gas in it and drive it home
it needs more than that. There are shops here locally that I can refer you to to do the work if you want
to make it a runner and driver before it ships out, but the deal before you here is for the car as it sits
where it sits and the rest is up to you.

Asking just
$3,750 obo
