1971 Westfalia Hardtop Camper

This 71 Bus is a fairly uncommon "hardtop" Westfalia camper.
Most of the campers of the era had the pop top, but one could be ordered without.
The nice part about having a non-pop top Camper is that they are lighter, lower, and a little faster than it's brothers
and they fit in almost any garage, while some of the pop tops will not. They still festure the same creature
comforts, yet packed compactly into a normal Bus package.

This example is a neat one because of it's history and it's condition. It was sold new at Corona Volkswagen
here in Southern California and it has been here is So Cal it's whole life. Adult owned and maintained,
it spent a fair bit of time as a tow vehicle behind it's elder owner's motorhome. Due to it's dry climate
life, it is a very very solid example and the body is straight and clean. It was recently repainted in the original white color
and the quality of the paintwork is nice...perhaps not concours, but certainly respectable. Mechanically the Bus runs
and drives well and the seller has enjoyed it's use around town on a fairly regular basis in recent days...so it is a turn-key runner.

The Bus has the proper silver painted wheels with flat caps and decent tires.
71 is a very desireable year as it is the last of the economical stalwart upright 1600cc engine, and the first year
for the well needed disc front brakes.

Rear bumper features the original guards with rubber strips and a nice tow hitch at the base of the bumper
would be of great use for towing a small utility trailer from campsite to campsite.

Its a good looking Bus...very fresh in appearance.

Just under the front bumper you can see the mounts for the folding tow bar that was used to haul it behind
the motorhome...it's a well thought out sturdy device.

Glass is good all around...nothing quite like the view out that big "bay window"
there is no better way to see where you are going!

The interior of the Bus is mostly original and is quite clean and well maintained.
The front seats were redone at some point in the past...they are holding up fine but do show
a little wear at the top corners.

Dashboard is clean and well equipped. The dash pad has a couple of very small cracks,
but is still presentable as is. Tjhe big instrument in the dash visable through the steering wheel
is an altimeter...it can easily be removed, but I must say it is one of the coolest looking gauges Ive seen in a camper in quite some time.

Here's another shot of the instruments.

Dash is very clean.

Here is another very cool accessory...this period CB radio features a handset like a telephone!
The speaker to the right of it blasts the trucker's voices into the cabin when the handset is not in use.
The CB lights up, but no noise comes out...but with a little tinkering it would be great fun to put this into use!

Here's a close up of the swutches on the CB... very cool.

Another shot of the front seats from the other side.

Front floors are super solid in this Bus.

Here's the production sticker from the driver's door jam...rolled off the assembly line in August of 1970

The original child's cot remains in very good condition as does the rear mosquito net.

And there's a child who fell dramatically off the cot and is phoning the authorities for help!!

Ice box cabinet in very good shape.
Amazing original flooring in the back...really a rarity to see the original stuff back here.

Back seats are in very nice shape...this rear one of course folds out into a bed for cosy camping.

The original Campmobile badge...check out that floor...that's what should be back here!

Table down... roomy.

Roof panels look to be in nice shape, as is the back shelf.

Clean

Stainless sink in great shape.

Here's the vent tube for the sink.

Underside of the rear hatch

Very clean and solid original paint on the floors.
Spare tire cover also in good condition.

Third brakelight mounted on the cabinet, viewable nicely from outside the car.

Stock 1600cc dual port engine is perhaps a little dusty, but it runs very well.
Strong motor and trans, brakes and steering are good...ready for adventure!

The underside of the Bus is very very dry and solid...no rust worries on this one!

Nothing but the original undercoating...solid solid solid.

Looks like signs of very very minor bodywork here...but more importantly...solid inner fender areas.

Good

Super solid.

Nice eh?

Original manuals are included and are in very nice shape.

Campmobile instructions as well!!

Info on the folding front tow bar!...manual for the CB radio too!

Sold new on October 15th 1970 at Corona VW

Nice dealer maintenance stamps in the books up till 73.

Travel stickers from local spots.

Overall a very clean Bus that is extremely solid underneath, good history of being well maintained and it shows.
Its a "good one"
