1962 Beetle Convertible Beach Machine

This beautiful 1962 VW Convertible was restored a few years back by a good friend of mine.
He is a VW mechanic during the day and then on the weekends runs a surf shop in Laguna Beach.
He decided a while back to blend his passions together to create a fun Beach Themed VW to run around
the beach on the weekends, and it was such a hit with the locals that he was requested to build more of them.
As any wise red0blooded American would do...he capitalized on the concept and in his spare time
has greated a handful of special Hawaiian themed VWs, and this is one of them.

Starting with a real 62 Convertible, he stripped it all down to a rolling shell and started from the ground up.
The floorpans were repaired and the mechnicals all rebuilt and a very nice quality paint and body job was done.
Everything was carefully re-assembled using quality parts, no corners cut.
The top frame is a custom metal framework encapsulated in bamboo and topped with stsitched palm leaves.
The result is a sturdy roof with all natural materials showing.
They can be a bit noisy on the freeway perhaps but around town it is the perfect set up.

As with any proper restoration, all new rubber and weather stripping was used, fresh body trim, new taillight lenses
and everything. This was not a thrown-together project...he's a bit of a perfectionist and does stuff right.

The fun continues in the interior with a super clean restored dashboard andsome little touches here and there.
Bambus parcel tray is a nice accessory, locking glove box door, restored steering wheel with proper ring and button.

Note the fine details such as the matching material behind the radio grille.
Locking hood latch is original to the convertible.

Tops of the doors trimmed in finished bamboo.

The seat upholstery is done in a great Hawaiian print material that is perfect for the beach.
Just wipe if off with a damp cloth and you are set. Red seat belts have been installed for safety.
All seat frames and handles and such have been detailed well and painted properly.
Its quality work.

More fun details here and there such as this carved Tiki trim on the windshield posts.

Tiki gear shift knob, Coco floor matsh and German square weave carpets.

Vintage Hawaii travel decal in the windshield.
All new window rubber and trim, wipers are new as well.

Surfboard shaped mirror is hand carved wood.

Vintage Hawaii plate is for display only and is flanked by a great Hula dancer plate frame with real fringe skirts.

Wolfsburg crest hood emblem and factory body trim remain.

Bright chrome and new headlights.
Very nice paint quality.

Classic Denman wide whitewall tires on stock wheels with painted center hubcaps and trim rings.
8 ball valve stem caps are fun as well.

Stock running boards were covered with the same upholstery material and then trimmed in bamboo along the edge.

What a fun car this is!
It reminds me of the old Fiat Jolly cars with their wicker seats and such...the ultimate beach cruiser to be sure.
The car has always been garaged and pampered since it's completion and has very few miles on it.

Original convertible only decklid with the vents. Restored modern California plates have been done in black
to give the look of a vintage plate.
Clear title.

Underside has been undercoated to keep it safe from the salt air.
Floor pans , heater channels and support rails were all dealt with and repaired as needed during the restoration.
It is solid and well done.

The engine is a good running 1600cc unit, converted to 12 volt electrics.
The builder is a seasoned VW mechanic and made sure that mechanically it would be reliable and ready for fun.

The vintage surfboards are not included with the sale...but the roof was made strong enough to support them while driving.

A truly unique and very fun VW that brings smiles and waves from everybody.
A wonderful conversation piece and a blast to drive around.
Its well done and is a turn-key driver.
