1950 VW Beetle For Sale

Vehicle is NO LONGER FOR SALE
(owner has decided to keep it and enjoy it)

The split window Beetle models are highly prized among collectors and always seem to
have an amazing presence about them when seen at the shows.
If you are rolling in a split, you are "someone".

This 1950 Standard model belongs to a real "someone" in the VW scene,
A life long historian and restorer, this man literally "wrote the book" on vintage VWs.

This car was a personal project for him that stretched over many years and man many dollars
to get it to the car you see here. The goal with the car was to have a car with that truly classic stock
look, but one that could be driven and enjoyed on the roads of today.
For anyone that has driven an all original spec one of these cars out in the world, you will understand the desire here.
25 horsepower, non sychro transmissions and questionable brakes are great for a car that sit in your "showroom"
but they are not much fun in our fast paced society of today.

The restoration was a full body off affair with a goal of it being as quality and show worthy as possible.
Perhaps the biggest proof of the results of that quest are in the numerous awards the car has won.

Best in Class at the Greenwich Concours is extremely high praise.

1st in class at Ramapo

And a full feature article in Hot VWs Magazine!!

All of this goes to show that this is truly a special Beetle.

At every show it draws the crowd and compliments.
That pure vintage look is undeniably attractive.

Peeking underneath you can see there there has been a few upgrades, but they are done so tastefully that
they do not detract from the classic look of the car.  Its not lowered or fitted with wacky wheels,
its not a ground pounding screaming dual carb two liter monster either.

Its a very tasteful blend of old and older...
Radial tires, Camber compensator, larger engine and trans, yet still retaining the early Split lever shocks.

The engine is a finely tuned 1600cc dual port with 12 volt electrics
yet with the split era "T" air cleaner and detailed finish engine tins.
The use of the original factory style hose clamps is another very nice subtle vintage touch.

That careful approach to drivability makes it a car that you can hop in and drive and truly enjoy.
Want to roll with the wife out to that Antiques store out in the country?  Lets go!

The car itself is a special one from the very start as it is one of extremely few 1950 model Beetles that
were officially destined for America through VW's first Importer, Max Hoffman of New York.
These "Hoffman" cars have become highly prized by collectors in the US due to their rarity.
There is a registry that has formed to track of of the remaining Hoffman cars and this example is very early on the list.

It is a Standard model as well, which is the most simple and pure version of the original design.
No chrome, simplistic interior. The minimalism of the Standard makes it truly stand out at events.

Originally the car would have come with a 16" rim and painfully skinny bias ply tires.
The builder chose to go with a later model wheel and the radial tires for comfort and safety
and kept the center caps and wheels painted body color as would be correct for the Standard.
The whitewall tires and red hubcap trim rings liven it up a bit visually, its a whole lot of "grey" without that choice.

The roof rack is another nice accessory and throughout the owners history with the car, a third brake light of
varying sizes have been installed so traffic behind you can see your intentions.
Well tucked turn signal lights have been added undereath the fender edges as well

This light is a bit extreme perhaps...but it gets the job done!!
Easily removable without a trace as are the club badges below.

Period luggage and leather straps are pretty awesome.

Hoffman badge is a modern item celebrating the Hoffman cars,
a small touch that helps tell the world that this Beetle is different.

Personalized plates are a nice touch as well

Gorgeous

Underneath the car is just as clean

Later wipers are currently fitted for their strength and function in actual weather
but the correct thin wire style wipers are available for those that want to look as period correct as possible.

Standard modeks came without horn grilles and the horn was mounted in front of the fender.

Roof rack is a beautifully restored original

Down to the BeKoWa sticker!!

Semaphores are fully functional

They were fully restored just as the rest of the car was.

The original body tag is in place as well as the extremely rare plastic "Made in Germany"
tag that is associated only with the early Hoffman cars.

Wonderful detailing and paintwork in the spare tire area.

The driver side glove box has been modified to accept a modern radio.

The trunk is beautifully trimmed

color matched door handles...these Standard models were quite pure with no chrome

Correct early large logo pedal pads and a wonderful accessory "cruiser pedal"
Carpets are done in the proper square weave and the rubber floor mats are complete and correct
including the extremely hard to find grooved tunnel mat.

The dash pods have been dressed up just a bit with deluxe trims around the outside
and a very nice placement of a 100,000 Kilometer award badge and a period Volkswagen script.

Many NOS and quiality new parts were used in the restoration.

Fuel tap extension is another nice period accessory.

The modern radio is easily covered with an attached cloth when not in use.

Here you can see the cloth pulled over...radio? What radio!

Nice touch of the Bosch battery logo on the battery.

Headliners in the standard cars were in the center only and the door and window posts were smooth and body color

Accessory folding coat hook is a rare item

Seats are beautifully done in period correct cloth.

Speakers for the modern audio are camouflaged in a vintage trunk

That fits perfect behind the back seat

Nice to see the correct luggage rails in place

Included now are a few shots of the extensive restoration process.

Lever shocks

Chassis detailing was very nice

Fantastic

When I say "from the ground up" Im not foolin!

In closing this is a very special car indeed.
A rare 1950 Standard that was originally delivered through Hoffman.
Restored to concours winning level by an avid lifetime VW "guru"
Mild and subtle modifications to make it a delightful driver in the modern world.
