1954 Beetle Convertible For Sale
The car has a few incorrect bits on it and even a couple reproduction parts
such as the front bumper
but overall appears to be quite complete and just begging to be taken home
and loved.
These early convertibles are tough to find in any condition, and this one
is pretty good.
With fully restored examples selling for upwards of $50K and more these
days, this one
certainly deserves to be brought back to life and restored to it's former
glory.
The body of this car appears very straight and solid.
The front fender have small turn signals that were reportedly installed
by the dealer...what dealer I am not sure.
Being an early model it had the semaphore turn signals from the factory
as well as short bumper guards
perhaps this was an attempt to make it up to code as far as US models.
The engine was changed at some point for a 40 horse unit.
The seller has a couple of 36 horse engines apparantly that he is willing
to part with
if the sales price is right on the car (not sure of the years of the engines
he has)
The decklid and rear apron were changed as well and obviously the taillights
are mounted much higher than original, but they are the proper "heart"
lights.
The engine is a little crusty looking but the owner tells me that it runs.
Firewall looks a litte wrinkly.
The heart taillights are pretty tough to find and were used on 1953 and
1954 models only in the US.
For those of you who were crying at the loss of the original decklid, the
seller is including in the sale a good original
convertible only "W" decklid with the rain catcher and an "H"
pattern apron.
The top is in decent shape but is not correct for the car as far as fittment.
It is lacking the glass rear window in these photos as well as the inner
headliner and padding.
The top bows are in good shape however. The wood along the rear of the
body where it meets the top is missing.
The owner does have the original glass rear window with the wood and metal
ring and a fresh seal
that comes with the car. (Huge bonus...very hard to find!)
Here's a good photo showing how straight the body is along the sides.
Under the hood is pretty basic, and largely un touched..
The owner states that it was dip-stripped to remove any nasties and then
epoxy primed.
I notice in the photos that the hardware to mount it is not in place.
Looks pretty straight and solid from what I can see here which is a big
bonus.
Note the original jack is in place
The interior has nice wool carpets and the door panels and front seats
are in good shape.
Interesting period radio in the dash, proper bat-wing steering wheel and
straight gear shifter.
Top latches and convertible rear view mirror and visors
Not bad in here...
The rear seat has been freshly upholstered but unfortunately does not match
the rest of the interior.
Detail of the inside of the top.
Normally the headliner covers all of this.
Some slight pitting on the chrome of the window frames...check out the
grooved window cranks and early ashtray.
The seller emailed me some photos of the underside of the car that I will
forward to interested parties.
It looks to be very solid underneath which is an amazing thing for an early
convertible.
Overall it looks like a great start on a rare early convertible. Many of
the tough parts to find are there and your shopping list
will be a short one (other than the usual restoration bits).
The car is located in Springfield Oregon
