1971 Karmann Ghia " Speedster" Convertible

Ever wonder what what would happen if an old Porsche Speedster got together with a Karmann Ghia
for a little whoopie session? The car you see before you might be what it's offspring would look like.

At first glance the car looks pretty normal...amazingly clean, but not wild.

The quality of the workmanship is excellent in all respects, the fit and finish is superb.
Porsche Arctic silver paintwork is beautiful and shows off the beautiful lines of the Ghia well.

A very refined classy look to the exterior... but lets dive in closer to see what makes
this mild mannered Ghia something truly extrordinary.

First of all we have the re-shaping of the front fenders to accept Porsche 911 headlights.
The stock bumpers are gone and custom aluminum T bars take their place, giving the front
a super clean appearance.

Note the custom machined T bar bumpers and their fittment as well as just how smoothly the headlights were grafted in.
The turn signals are now worked into the headlights as well making everything as smooth as possible.

Another exterior clue that something really different is going on, is the central mounted racing fuel cap in the hood.
Very 550 Spyder looking.

Then with a peek inside you start to see the picture more clearly with the custom Porsche Speedster
style dashboard and interior.

Porsche instrumentation and all the dash switches and such
as well as the gorgeous Derrington style wood rimmed steering wheel with Porsche horn push.

The more you look...the more you see.
Check out the custom foot rest down by the pedals, the pocket in the carpet like on the 356 models,
the starter switch too is fresh from the Porsche parts bin.

Masterfully crafted in it looks like it belongs.
High quality wool German Square weave carpets throughout.
Note the custom machined steering column support.
Oh...and the steering column itself is Porsche stuff

A little farther back you can take in the whole image a bit better.

Door panels are stitched in a Porsche inspired pattern with materials common to the cars as well.
Door grab handles are also from a 356.

The seats and racing seat belts give it a strong sports car appeal.
Note the polished door sill threshold plates.

A much better shot of the interior from the driver's side.

Porsche shifter...and check out the sweet custom heater control lever...amazing!
Oh...and that shifter connects to a Porsche 901 close ration 5 speed gearbox by the way...

Rear area features leather luggage straps and the switch on the base here is a line lock that fuctions as a parking brake.
The attention to detail is really impressive on this car.

Out back is a heavy breather drivetrain that allows it to perform at the Porsche levels that the car inspires
to be. And everything is very sanitary and well executed.
Underneath the Porsche 901 5 speed transmission is a wild addition that required significant engineering to adapt.
(like widening the floor tunnel and all custom mounts)
Porsche 911 T brakes with cross drilled rotors and stainless braided lines.

2175cc engine features a brand new SF Racer case
78.4 Demello 8 dowel crank with Rimco stroker rods (all balanced)
94mm Cima- Mahle pistons and cylinders with teflon buttons and Total Seal rings.
Engle 120 cam with .435" lift and 295 degree duration, Scat lifters too.
Heads are 045 VW units with 3/4" reach plugs, 40 X 35.5 valves and dual springs fully ported and polished.
Compression ratio is a pump gas friendly 8.5:1.
Scat solid rocker shafts and swivel foot adjusters as well as chomoly pushrods.
Heavy duty oil pump, "dog house" oil cooler and shroud and an aluminum oil filter with screw on cap.

Carbs are 45mm Dellortos with hex bar linkage and mated to match ported manifolds.
009 distributor and a CB performance coil mount.
Very tasteful aluminum work in the engine compartment gives it that aircraft look.

Custom decklid prop is a cool touch as well.
Engine output is estimated at 150 horsepower with a 6200rpm redline ...so she's a screamer!

Bugpack header and tuck-away exhaust sytem keeps the look mellow out back...little clue to the beast within.

The really impressive stuff is the details...here's a sweet shot of the custom made bumpers and how well they are fitted.

The license plate bolts hide the lighting for the plate!

The polished Porsche wheels are wrapped in Bridgestone rubber and nicely tucked into the fender wells.

The caris low but not insanely so...built to be a driver with the focus on performance and handling.
Bodywork and paint is excellent.

Top quality work...the photos really do not do the car justice.

Here's the sweet fuel filler set up...very tidy.

Trunk is fitted with more square weave material...check out the custom hood hinges as well.

Super clean.

The car was featured in Hot VW's Magazine in March of 2004, so it has some provenance
and the hands that worked on the vehicle are nearly legendary in the Porsche scene as the car and owner are located near
the shop of Gary Emory of Parts Obsolete, one of the top early Porsche parts and race preperatory faclities in the Portland
Oregon area. Rothsport, another well known Porsche race prep shop in Tualatin Oregon did a lot of the mechanical fabrication as well.
It is exceptionally well engineered and phenomenal buckets of money were thrown at is because the owner simply wanted the best

It is tasteful and refined, not wild and flashy, which is a part of it's appeal.
The car is a bit of an artwork, but a fully functional one that will provide years of enjoyment.
Its really a difficult car to describe via photos and text...I think it's a car that must be experienced
first hand in order to be fully understood. The car is located in the Portland area and can be seen by appointment only.

A very unique top quality creation for someone who can appreciate the best.
