1962 Crew Cab Transporter For Sale

These Doubla Cab trucks are without a doubt the most desireable models of the Working Class Busses.
I get emails and calls almost weekly from people looking for a decent one and I wish I could somehow build a secret
factory somewhere wehere I could pump these babies out...but alas that is just a pipe dream and the ones that come
through the website are few and far between, especially decent examples like this.

This one is a California Bus that is in the hands of an active member of the VW scene.
Its been a daily driver and frequent attendee to all the So Cal VW events for the past few years.
Its an older restoration, not particularly fresh or flawless, but it is still quite presentable and its a good driver.

The engine and trans were rebuilt about 9000 miles ago, it's got nice tires and some cool accessories
such as the Safari windows in front and back. The color on the bottom half is the original color for the Bus,
the top half was originally blue as well, but somewhere along the line it was painted in the two tone blue and white.

Other little upgrades have been done over the years such as the chrome VW emblem and the headlight eyebrows.
The interior has been updated a little bit as well, and the engine is a little larger than the original 62 model powerplant.

The body is overall pretty straight and sings of rust are very very minimal.

The window rubber is all in decent condition, glass is all good as well.

Pop out windows have the long "spoon" latches from an early Deluxe model...they open much wider than original.

The rear Safari window is a nice aftermarket add on.

Sighting down the sides it is overall quite straight.
Some ever so slight waves here and there but no signs of any serious collision damage or repair.
It looks like a pretty honest old truck, not one crafted with Bondo or fiberglass.

Everything fits decent, the gates are in good shape, the rear corners look good.
Its pretty rare to find a truck model in this straight of a condition...they tended to be treated roughly in days past.

Blue California "commercial" plates have obviously been on the Bus a long time which
help cement it's history a bit. These plates were issued in 73 or 74 I think and continued up until
the 80's. So it's safe to say it's been in California for at least the last 25 years if not it's whole life.

Here you can see the reflection down the sides...not bad for an old truck eh?

Close up of the side gate.
Paint quality is decent, but not show level. There is a bit of "orange peel"
and there are a fair bit of little chips and scratches and other little flaws that are certainly understandable
considering that the paint is many years old.

Excellent radial tires with thin whitewalls and stainless trim rings on the stock 15" Bus wheels.

Nice look over all.

The Safari front windows are aftermarket units and are sure nice on a sunny day.

Headlight eyebrows are cool.

Chrome VW emblem is a nice bit of "bling" on a truck.
The chrome emblems were reserved originally for the Deluxe models only.

There is some minor rust bubbling starting to show at the base of the front nose. Nothing has broken through yet
but the bubbles are there.

Detail of the Safari windows.

Some very minor rust bubbles in the window frame as well...thats about the worst of it.

Big Wednesday event stickers in the window.

These are great trucks...room for people and for stuff.
I had a 62 similar to this back in the 1980's that was my daily driver and weekend show car.
If it ever pops up again somewhere I will probably buy it just to regain that bit of my youth...this one is close,
but it's not "my" old Bus.

The rocker panels are very smooth and solid looking.

Underside is also quite solid with no signs of the usual rust issues that plague these vehicles.

A shot on the other side.

Here is one small rust spot that I noticed underneath.
This is where the seat belt bolts in for the rear seat on the passenger side.

Bottoms of the doors seem solid.

Under the front floors are excellent.

This is a super common spot for rust to occur on these Busses and this one is super solid!
No signs of any repairs either!

Drivers side rocker panel.

The tail gates are in suprisingly nice shape as well.

The Bed looks pretty straight and clean.

Door panels are very clean.

Kick panels under the dash are very nice as well.

The stock speedometer.
Actual total mileage is unknown, but the engine and trans have about 9000 miles on them according to the owner.

AM FM "Classic Look" Cassette radio fills the dash.
Fortunately it doesnt look like there has been any cust to the dash.

Headliner panels are all super clean.

Very nice!

Rear seat is in place and has the proper stand. Seat belts are in back here too so you can haul the kids.

Divider panel

Floors look good back here too.

Under the back seat looks decent as well.

Another shot of the dash.
Check out the accessory shifter extender and the chrome ashtray.

Floor mats are decent.

Passenger door panel

A shot of the front seat from the passenger side.

Matching spare tire and wheel.

Heres the production tag. March 4th 1962 Production.
Los Angeles port delivery, original color was blue.

Oh...I guess I forgot the mechanical bits...lets go out back and take a peek.

Ok already...lift the lid...

Inside is a clean 1600cc single port engine with 12 volt alternator and a mechanical advance distributor.
The electrics have been converted to 12 volt from the original 6 volt.
The 6 volt starter and flywheel remain, so she spins to life quickly when you turn the key.
The engine runs smoothly and the transmission and brakes are as they should be as well.
The trans was rebuilt about 9000 miles ago as well and features a "freeway flyer" fourth gear
so you can keep up on the highway fairly well.

Engine compartment shots

There is a little rust under the battery but it is minimal.

Underside of the engine lid.

Oh...here's a couple of small blisters in the paint on the back tailgate.

Under the engine shot.
Exhaust is a nice merged header with tuck away muffler.
No functional heater with this system, so you east coast guys will have to wear the thermals on the cold days.
Transmission has a very slight leak visable.

So thats about all I can say about this fine truck.
As you can see it is not a flawless show machine, but it is still a presentable and pretty honest old hauler.
Finding one of these in any condition these days is getting harder by the minute.
This one wont last long Im guessing.
Dont snooze on this one...grab it while you can!
