Full Custom VW Bus For Sale

Ive seen a lot of old VWs in my lifetime, probably more than most folks, and I must admit I have grown
a bit numb to it over time.  They are all so awesome and each one is special in its own way, but it really
takes something incredible to make my jaw drop. This Bus did that.
The moment I saw it in person I was pretty blown away...so much so that I told the owner
that before he sells it, it really needed to be photographed for the VW magazines.
This month the Bus hits the pages of Hot VWs Magazine, and now here it is for sale on Oldbug.

The best part about the build is just how subtle everything is.
At first glance it just looks like a clean old Bus, but the more you look, the more surprises
jump out at you and all the way through the quality of the construction is evident.
While this was a Bus that was built by some "normal guy" in his home garage,
it truly blows away countless professional full custom builds I have seen in all levels of the car scene.
This is a work of art.

Paint and body is exceptional, fit and finish is jewelry level fine.
Mild stance, no slammed down silly low to the point of being undrivable.

Check out the reflection down the side here...so smooth!

The monochrome look fits the Bus very well and was done to the finest detail.
Body trim remains in place but has been color matched, bumpers, latches, even the taillight rings are finished
to match and at the highest level.

The license plate, frame and hardware as well!
Obviously this is just for show, but it truly looks amazing.

Mega clean machine!

Notice the tastefully re-shaped bumper radius that matches the curve of the body
The body seams in the back have been shaved smooth as well.
LED taillights worked into the back to give it that early look.

The handles and trim are so perfectly matched and extremely well detailed.

So nice!

Nice modern touch with the Volkswagen badge

Wheels are factory VW wheels from a modern model and the fit is perfect!
Notice the cross drilled rotors through the gaps here.
Its not just the look that has been modernized.

Check out the large VW logo up front and shaved nose grille and turn signals.
Very slick LED signal lights worked cleanly into the bumper blade.

Out back the engine is absolutely the coolest looking Type 4 Bus motor I have ever seen.
Check out that finish and detail!!

Big Weber carbs replace the original fuel injection.

Details details...just gorgeous

Tool box fitted in the engine room

Freshly rebuilt, mild performance upgrades, spotlessly clean and it runs superb.

Nice finishes in the engine room with the texture coating and all new seals and rubber.
Vin number left smooth for easy identification and a nice detail with the Germany tag above it.

Beautiful!

Volkswagen script is color matched as well

Third brake light worked into the rear hatch

The even bumper gaps at the corner look so great.
Careful attention to detail like this makes it really stand out.

Check out these amazing taillights.
They seem so perfectly vintage, yet are bright LED units.

More details out back...the "safari" rear window

Check out the custom fabricated hinge panel and cover boxes.
Very slick.

Interior detail too is just as impressive.
Note the subtle color matched speakers and the courtesy light

Fantastic headliner treatment, very clean.
Notice anything out of place here?...Look carefully.
Many more surprises to come inside here!

Beautifully fit German square weave carpets, nice luggage strap hooks.

Its all just so freakin clean!

Bosch battery and a power cut off switch installed for storage and security.

Power windows, more subtle speaker installation.

Say WHAAAAT??
The split screen Dash and genuine Porsche 356 wood rim wheel are so "wrong" but look so incredibly "right"!
Let this images stew in your brain a bit while we look at a few other things and we will come back to it.

Rear vents are factory, 1972 was the first year for the wider vents.

Another totally out of the box modification here on the bus is the overhang above the windshield.
Taking design inspiration from the "split screen" Busses, the roof was pulled forward to give the
visor look.  Its something that non VW people will probably never catch, but its a mind bender for
those that know.  Its got a factory look to it for sure.

Peeking up under the overhang it totally looks factory!

The vents are dummy vents though...no flow through ventilation like on the early models.

Cool!

The wipers have been relocated from the factory position as well.
Youd never guess it looking at it, but park it next to another 72 and you will see it!

Also gone is the center grille and factory turn signals that were on the body to start.

Really a smooth and slick look overall.

On the inside the games continue with the "fresh air box" from a split screen model fitted to the roof.
Again, its installed to a level that really looks factory to those that don't know what was correct from year to year..

Check out the fuel filler area...also changed from factory and beautifully smoothed out inside.
Locking gas cap, I like the octane sticker as well...nice detail.

Everywhere you look it is spotless clean and fresh.
Hardware and latches all freshly plated as factory.

The build of the Bus is fully documented in a beautiful leather photo album that comes with the Bus.

This is the "before" believe it or not!
This started life as a 1972 "Adventure Wagon" with the huge fiberglass top.

A pic of the way the dash used to be...
So many changes.

Don't let the backyard pics fool you here...this is all truly skilled and phenomenally well detailed construction.

The start of the envisioning of the roof modifications...maybe a little too much overhang in this shot?

The bus was put on a full rotisserie so that all the chassis could be attended to

Having the right tools sure beats working on your back!

The fab work on the rear hinge area

The start of the air box design

All to bare metal and carefully worked to perfection.

The split screen dash is a lot narrower than that of a Bay Window
Here you can see how much was needed to make it fit

Sections from another dash were carefully welded in place.

And now installed and painted.

Templates and fitting of the rear bumper modifications.

The details and custom fabrication continues on this Bus wherever you look.
Take a peek at the center seat armrest as an example.
Not only the bracket and support but the amazing hand shaped ood amrest itself!

Interior is spotless and classy.
Like the rest of the Bus, restraint was used when it came to the details and everything has a wonderful cohesive look to it.

Nice Wolfsburg embroidery on the front seat headrests.

I love the fresh air box fitment

And even the split screen heater tube was fit in place along with the vents.
Floor mounted handbrake handle instead of under the dash.

Parcel tray was also stretched and fabbed to fit.

I love the round pedals as well!

Super cool

Nice carpet fit and an added matching mat as well.

Headliner detail

Seats have been trimmed with very nice closing panels.
The Wolfsburg crest embroidery is a nice touch here as well.

Concealed LED lighting under the seat frame gives a great glow at night when getting into the van.

More fun process shots of the build...

That wood...wow!

Wagons West front beam with disc brakes.

Freshly rebuilt trans

I just cant get over that dash!
So well done!

Amazing

Wagons West adjustable spring plates and polished billet caps.

Wilwood brakes

Some underbelly shots...very clean.

Well engineered and constructed all the way through.
As I look at this Bus and see the quality of the work and cool updates and changes it gets me thinking
of the trend in the car scene with the top level "modernization" happening in the Porsche scene with firms like Singer
and the Emory outlaws.  Or the Icon Land Cruisers and other builds.
Professional reconstructions of vintage cars to a level far beyond original and using the best that modern day has to offer.
This is a VW Bus version of those in my eyes.
Its not just another "custom VW"...there is more to it than that.

Superb

Better than new

Front turn signal detail

Floors of course are rock solid

Great detail in the deep corners

What a Bus!

She's tidy

The End.

Its hard to wrap this one up and feel like Ive done it justice.
It is in a class of its own. A truly one of a kind build to a level of detail not often found
in the VW world. Its a vehicle for someone that truly "gets it", someone that wants the best
and wants something absolutely unique and quality.
