Original 1963 Beetle For Sale

This is a very clean original "survivor" car that came out of Colorado and is now in the hands
of a prominant collector in New Jersey. It has just 77,000 original miles, is 99% rust free and is very very original.
Original paint, original interior, numbers matching engine and all original trim and bumpers.
Its pretty rare to come across one that is this clean and totally unmolested.

There is something special about an original car that is kinda hard to describe.
It seems to tell a story more somehow, you look at the wear and you imagine where the car has gone and
what adventures it has seen. When a car is all freshly restored it loses that quality.
I think that is why "survivor" cars are becoming so highly prized these days.
Our modern lives are full of perfection...the disposable society...when it breaks get a new one.
An original car like this feels special when you are in it...kinda like your old favorite shirt that you just wont get rid of.
It may not look all perfect but it just feels good.

This car really looks like one of those "feel good" machines.
I have not seen it up close as it is in New Jersey, but I do know the owner and trust his judgement as he
is a seasoned VW collector..plus he took some nice photos.

The car came out of Colorado originally, so it spent it's life in a good climate.
Its got an amazing array of original documentation too...window sticker, owners manuals, invoices, service booklet
and more...which is truly the icing on the cake.

Its all original stuff, top to bottom and end to end except for tires, muffler, clutch and a full fresh brake rebuild.
OK...the oil has been changed too...

It still presents itself very well and the color is just awesome...Gulf Blue, one of those great muted 60's
VW colors.

Original paint on the wheels, original color matched running board covers have faded to grey over time.

Great stuff.
The current owner has touched up a few scratches with a proper color touch-up, but what you see here is
all original finish.

Headlights are the original Hella lensed units, not restored. Electrics are still 6 volt.

Chrome still has a nice shine and shows minimal age

Hella lenses throughout.

Original glass all the way around.

Even the windshield is the original stuff.
Minor aging to the rubber seals as would be expected.

Oh yeah...it's a VW (in case you were wondering!)

There are two spots where there was any noteable damage, both on the drivers side fenders.
This scratch/dent has been carefully worked back in place and touched up.

From this angle you can barely see it...a minor flaw.

Original paint on the wheels is in impressive shape

Rear fender has a couple touched up dings as well

Here's a close up of the touch up spot.

Mirror is a slightly odd one but is original to the car.
Note the factory cap on the hinge covering the threads.
Mirrors and antennas were all dealer installed prior to the delivery to the customer, so there is
a pretty wide variation of mount spots and equipment out there.

A peek through the drivers window...
Rubber scarpers all look to be in place and are holding up.
Cars out here in hot California rarely has supple original rubber...so this car must have been in a climate
where there is a bit more humidity...and it was obviously garaged and well taken care of during the years.

Everything fits as it should on this car...one of the big benefits of a nice original car.
Nobody put these cars together better than the factory did. Once a car comes apart for a restoration
or major repair it always seems to lose a little of it's integrity. Owning a well preserved original car
is a pretty dreamy experience when compared to a poorly re-assembled car that has had many unskilled hands on it.

The engine in the car is the original numbers matching 40 horse with all the proper trimmings.
There is even a very neat accessory oil filler extension on this engine that is quite rare to see these days.

Original carburator and distributor, all lines and tins are wheere they should be
and the car runs and drives very tight and dreamy...engine has that "sewing machine" feel.
The owner states " it runs like a top!"

Factory VW fuel pump...check out the hose clamps on the fresh air hoses...you got it...originals.

Engine is pretty clean underneath as well.
Brakes are all new, clutch as well, transmission shifts smoothly and the steering is tight and proper.
77.000 original miles since new.

The car was never undercoated prior to delivery as was customary in some states.
The joy of this is that you can see exactly what is going on under here.
There is just a light layer of road grime and surface rust going on, but no metal perforation.
The only spot the owner has found any noteable rust damage is a small hole on the rear bumper bracket mount points.
Everything else is solid.

I had a car in similar condition years ago and just for kicks I got some fine steel wool and some rubbing compound
and I went after the fender wells and the floor pans with it and the results were astonishing
The factory finish is pretty hard stuff and a lot of what you see here is truly on the surface...with a lot of elbow grease
the vast majority of it will go away and some of the black underneath will emerge.

Here's a small shot demonstrating the results of this sort of polishing treatment.
One half of the bumper was polished with fine steel wool and rubbing compound...the other side is untouched.
Night and day difference dont you think?

So...perhaps not all of this will come off, but you might be very suprised if you gave it a try...
Regardless the cool thing about this car is that it is not rusted out and everything is very solid.

Nice and straight too...quite often the floor pans get smashed up a bit by unknowing mechanics wielding
floor jacks...one time will leave it's mark forever.

Rear apron is very clean.

Under the front hood is impressive as well.

Original hood latch still has a wonderful shine, as do the original Kamax bolts that hold it on!

o
Very clean in the spare tire well.

Super straight on the sides.

Bumper brackets all line up as they should.

Wiring is completely untouched and everything functions properly.

Original fiber glove box is in very nice shape.

Original paint code tag...

Original wide whitewall tire on the spare?

OK lets go inside and see what is up in the interior.
Original door panels lok great

Wow.

Pretty nice for all original materials dont you think?

Look how cherry the headliner is under the rear window...this is a spot that is almost always sun-burnt

Here's a better shot of that area and the original wooll carpets in the luggage area.

OK...the current owner replaced the carpet along the heater channels as it had worn through, but he used the proper wool
stuff to replace it...everything else inside is original even the rubber floor mats which are in impressive condition.

Here you can see the new carpet on the right versus the original on the area above the footrest.
Its not an exact match but it is as close as you can come with the carpet sets available today.

Door sills are super clean

Even the pedal area looks great on the original mats.

Picture yourself here...and imagine that smell...you know the smell Im talking about.
That aroma of original VW interiors...the horsehair in the seat pads,
the wool of the carpet and the smeel of time past. If I could bottle that up and sell it
it would be a major hit. A restored car lacks that smell...and it is intoxicating.
If I have to explain it...would wouldnt understand until you experience it.
You tru VW nuts out there know exactly what Im talking about.

Mileage is original!!

Original shift patter sticker and "Fasten Seat Belt" foil sticker are intact.

No smoking please...

The "Oh my God" handle is in nice shape with just a little discoloration.

Glove box still has some fuzzy to it inside.

Headliner is all original and in nice shape.

Some discoloration from time but that is what makes it so cool.

A shot backwards...note the domelight actually functions.

OK...the seams are starting to split on the front seats.
I have seen this sort of thing successfully restitiched, but it;s gott be done by someone who knows
what they are doing. The material isnt damaged, it is just the thread that has deteriorated over time
so it can be done.

Here's another small spot

And another on the drivers side.

But otherwise the upholstery is in pretty nice shape for it's age.

Factory radio block off plate...never had a radio in it.
Steering wheel looks great.

Here's some of the original paperwrk...awesome stuff.

Original dealer manual folder

Grand Junction Colorado!

Manuals are in very nice shape.

Original owner service card is still present

Not often you run across these.

Where's the time machine? Im going back to get me a couple dozen of these... $1852.22 cents.
Those were the days....

Original window sticker!!!

And a copy of the original Colorado title.

And more...how about an ice scraper from the dealership?

And lets not forget the original tool roll.

Cool VW service sticker in the door jam.

What a great "survivor" car this is...and that paperwork...dreamy!!
Its not flawless by any means and the mileage while quite low is not in the "Holy Grail" range
but I think that is a part of what makes the car great. Its not so perfect or so low in the mileage that you would be
afraid to drive it and enjoy it.
