1965 VW Standard Microbus For Sale
The story of the Bus is that t was bought new in 65 by a gentleman in Montana.
He drove it for the next 7 years and then stored it away in 1972.
It remained in storage until around 2002 when it was put up for sale along
with other cars from this fellow's collection.
There were well over 100 cars in the stash and buyers came from around
the globe to attend the sale.
The Bus was deep in the warehouse, an almost cave like affair dug deep
into a Montana hillside.
It took quite a while to get it out, but the buyer, a well known actor
and car enthusiast knew what he had found.
The Bus was professionally revived and detailed to an amazing level.
The wheels and bumpers were repainted as well as the nose of the Bus from
the wipers down.
The fender wells had a fair bit of paint chipping from the rough Montana
roads, so those too were re-sprayed.
Other than those areas...the Bus retains it's original paint finish that
is simply in amazing condition.
The interior of the Bus is all original as well, with the only change being
the addition of modern seat belts
so the owner could travel in safety. In fact, upon reaching a milestone
birthday, he, along with two good friends,
drove the Bus from California to New York to attend a reunion of sorts.
The Bus was then shipped back to
California and took a prized spot within his collection. After a few years
it was sold to a local
VW Porsche enthusiast and close friend and it has been stored in a wonderful
garage in the So Cal mountains.
The whole history of the Bus is known from day one, which is a wonderful
thing.
The odometer reads just 42,000 original miles, and this is known to be
accurate.
The Bus drives and runs exceptionally well and the condition of the Bus
overall is quite miraculous.
The glass is all original, including the windshields.
The rubber is all in very good condition, everything is fully functional
and in near showroom condition.
The repaint of the front nose was just to repair numerous stone chips,
there was no rust or damage
and the color match and finish of the paint is superb. I dont think I would
have caught it unless I was told.
Chrome is bright and gorgeous...all the lenses are factory, everything
as it should be.
Window rubbers and felts are in great shape.
The original paint truly shines like new and save for a very few slight
"door dings",
you would swear it was a fresh restoration.
Impressive reflections down the sides...and this is original finish here...not
a restoration!
Rocker panels are superbly solid
Wheels have been repainted in the original paint color and high end Continental
tires installed.
Bumpers too were repainted...but the rest is all original and the fit and
finish is factory superb.
The cleanliness of everything in the corners and such is amazing.
No wax build up on the rubbers, no signs of age to the materials...stored
in just the right climate for preservation
and very well kept since then.
What a beauty! The colors are Sea Blue and Blue White, which are arguably
the best color combo
for the Bus in this era.
I kept having to remind myself..."original paint" as I walked
around and shot these photos.
It is so nice it is hard to believe...but it is true.
Hinges are all very clean and tidy.
Chrome is bright.
All orginal parts such as the mirrors.
Wow...in the corners you can see just how nice this Bus is.
Here's a small ding behind the passenger front wheel arch...there are a
few such things, but they only serve
as reminders that this is not a restored car...but one with some history.
I tried to shoot a photo of the markings on the glass but my "smart"
camera would not co-operate.
These are the original windshields in the Bus.
A stunning Bus in a spectacular surrounding!
This was my favorite shot of the inspection... the lake, the mountains,
a bit of remaining snow
and the best view of the automotive world...through the split windscreens
on an old Bus.
I think heaven must be something like this...
Ok...back out of dream world...lets look at the interior.
Steering wheel is in excellent shape with only the most minor wear on the
ridges on the spokes.
Fresh air box is clean and the original headliner is impressive.
42,473 miles on the odometer at the time of the photos...and this is the
genuine original mileage.
original radio
This tachometer was installed when the Bus was new.
It is currently disconnected, but can be hooked up if desired.
And dont worry about the hole...no modifications were made and the original
ashtray was kept all the years in case
you ever wanted to put it back in place and get rid of the tach.
Shift extension.
Very minor wear on the edge of the parcel tray and controls...proof of
use,
but for 42,000 miles it is still in impressive shape.
Excellent and clean
The floors are superbly solid and very clean original paint.
A little paint wear on the gas pedal
Detail of the minor wear on the steering wheel spokes.
Washer bottle still in place
Drivers side floor.
Interior panels are excellent all the way around.
The upholstery is all original and in simply insane condition.
Yes...original...WOW
New seatbelts were installed before the cross country trip.
M code tag and paint sticker.
Spare wheel and tire were restored to match the ones on the Bus
Door panels are excellent
Impressive condition
Belts installed back here as well.
When is the last time you saw original salt and pepper vinyl in this nice
shape?
Cargo floors are also superb original paint
Kick panel is in place and excellent.
Headliner is amazing.
A few scuffs on the side panels, and the hinge covers have yellowed with
age...but WOW!
Original hardboard deck material is still in place over the engine area...this
is so rarely seen these days
and the vast majority of restorations end up going with carpet back here...but
this is the correct stuff!
So clean around the latches... it is these sort of details that really
get my blood pumping... so nice to see one so well preserved.
The engine is the original, numbers matching unit.
It is wonderfully clean and it runs superb.
Oh...I believe the rear apron was repainted to take care of some battery
area scratches...the the rest
of the paint in the engine room is original.
Coil looks new...and the plate it is scrwed to is not correct...but with
42,000 miles and most of those on
bumpy mountain roads of Montana...it is totally understandable that the
factory coil mount probably broke loose
and required this repair.
Original carburator wuth the governor and safety wires in place.
Original German hose clamps!
Valve adjustement stick intact.
Very clean...hoses have all been replaced too.
Original paint in here has not been polished up...a good little elbow grease
and it will shine even better than it does now.
Under the engine is very clean and dry...not a leaker.
Chassis is totally rust free and never undercoated.
No big grease build-up or nasties.
Totally solid.
The fender wells were resprayed...so they are fresh and clean and pretty.
There was no rust in these areas, just stone chips that would have eventually
been openings for rust to attack.
Rather than leave it alone, the owner decided to spray a fresh coat in
the wells to keep everything at bay.
Very clean and a good color match as well.
This was cleanly done without overspray on the suspension components...
What a find.
This s without a doubt the nicest original Sea blue 65 Standard that I
have ever seen.
Here's the Montana plate tha was on the Bus when discovered...parked in
1972 and not pulled out for
30 years!!!
Original owners manual is included as well.
Its hard to really convey how nice this Bus is...I did the best I could
with the photos...hopefully you are getting
the same vibe I did while looking at it up close and personal. It is an
impressive survivor. Low mileage, known history
no wrecks, no rust and 95% original paint, all original interior and in
stunning shape throughout.
This is a very rare opportunity to aquire one in this condition.
