The "Red Runner" 1980's Show Beetle is back!!

Red Runner is a legend from the 80's that had spent years stashed in storage.
It emerged in 2009 and was sold through Oldbug.com to a buyer in New York
who has kept the car in amazing shape and has made the car fully operational.
He has enjoyed some careful driving and local showing...and now is ready to send it off to a new home.

Here's the car as seen in the pages of Hot VWs Magazine in January 1987.
A full feature and cover shot, the car was a show stopper wherever it went.

There photos show the car as it is today at its current home in New York.
Very minor changes have been done purely in the eyes of making it operational.
The exhaust was swapped out as the one on the car was painted body color.

Front plate mounted carefully on the nerf bar bumper.
Center caps swapped for chrome as the others were painted.
Tires are fresh and in great shape.

The custom painted chassis cover has been removed for preservation and is hung on the owners garage wall.

Still all finished and tidy under the hood.

Engine has been serviced and tuned and runs great, brakes are fully functional, etc.

Its a gorgeous car inside and out.

Hard to believe that this car was built 30 years ago and still looks this fresh and amazing.
Obviously very well cared for the whole time.

The set of iages above show the car as it is today...below are a set of photos taken in 2009 when the car
came out of hibernation and made another run of local shows in the So Cal area.

And here is the car as at Bug In 34 on May 3rd 2009
Still a stunning show machine that has withstood the test of time amazingly well.

Still fully show worthy and complete with all awards and memorabilia from it's days in the spotlight.

Detailed to an extreme level inside, outside and upside down.

Numerous chrome parts, many nuts and bolts "timed" so that they face the same direction for the ultimat level of detail.

This car was a consistent top winner in the legendary 80's Johnny's Show For Gold Series
and was one of the best of the best show cars from the era of glam and glitter that was the period's
theme. The days were different then...cars were built to a level of extreme fashion and function was put secondary.
It was great fun indeed.

This is not a common level of restoration and customization...chromed and detailed brake parts
within the brake drum are simply way over the top.
Check out the other chrome bits under here as well.

Underside of the floor pan is covered with a fantastic fiberglass belly pan with detailed mural.

Look deep in the photo at the trans-axle, check out the brake parts again and look in the mirror at the bottom of the engine

Even the mufflers are painted and hand painted with graphics!!!

Interior is all custom as well with an amazing fiberglass dash with steering wheel and instrumentation
from a 1980's Mazda.

An extra belly pan with directional painted graphics makes it visible through the mirrors when you show it!!

No area went untouched...check out the pinstriping on the gas door!

Countless trophies are included!

Best Custom winner at the 87 World of Wheels event in Santa Maria...a winner at many events, not just VW.

Massive trophies!!

One of the most prolific award winners in the California VW scene in the mid 1980's
and a true bit of Cal Look history.

Now she is road worthy and ready for play.
Only a couple hundred miles driven on it since.

What a great car, and what a fun time warp of one of the most extreme show machines of it's day.
This would be an awesome museum addition... any takers?
