1964 VW Deluxe Microbus For Sale

This gorgeous 1964 model "hardtop" Deluxe Microbus is about as nice as they get.
Top level restoration to show standards by a prolific builder/collector in California,
he pulled out all the stops on this one and the results are stunning.

Every nut and bolt turned and everything in showrrom condition inside and out.
This is a beauty!

1964 was the first year for the "13 window" model Deluxe. The last year for the pointed or "slash"
bumpers. It is basically the same as the "big daddy" 21 window, but without the ragtop and skylight windows.

This one has a lot of very nice details and minor differences that makes it a very stunning, stand-out build.
The owner is a fanatical fellow and he always likes to go a step further than most do to create a very unique
vehicle. Often it is little details such as the early style grab handle on the dash, that is fitted with color matched vinyl in the center.
In 64, that handle was just a cheap plastic bit...this one goes through the stock holes, but it is oh so much cooler!

The speedometer was fully restored and the odometer re-set to zero.
This Bus is seriously like brand new!

Other little details like the choice of black knobs and a black steering wheel rather than the original off-white.
A personal choice that just pops out at you as being just a bit special when compared to one that is "factory original"

1964 was the first year for the wide rear hatch, that really allows for much easier access to the stuff in back.
And it provides much better vision out the back as well!
To compare to the earlier models, picture the hatch the same width as the engine lid...you will see what I am talking about!

Safari windows are an ultimate cool factor item.
The electrics on this Bus are fully sorted and everything works as it should.

The paint finish is superb and the chrome emblem and polished body trim are excellent.

The safari windows are really neat.
This option was originally designed for tropical climates where ventilation was desperately needed.
Once these were discovered by the sun loving VW nuts in the rest of the world, they became a
very highly prized addition to any Bus. Now of course, they are much more commonplace and reproduction
kits are available and they are seen on Busses all around the world... but it is easy to see why...they are great!

When shut, the windows seal tight and the wipers are set on spring loaded bases
so they can be swung up and on to the glass and be functional.
When folded down they are clipped into a rubber holder that is affectionately called the "one eyed duck"

Another detail that the builder did with this one is that he used the long window latches from the early
model Busses... These "Long spoon" latches pop the windows open very wide, with the ones normally fitted to this year
would open the windows only half as much.
He also made all the side windows into pop-outs, where originally the farthest back would have been stationary.

Full flaps open!!

The interior is beautiful and in the next few photos the floor mat was removed to show the
level of cleanliness and solidity to the floor.

The split bench seat up front, along with the two full width seats in the back
make this a true 9 seater vehicle!  Talk about a party!

The floor is excellent and the level of detail to everything is top stuff.

Clean!
All new seals and rubber everywhere.

Here in the back it is shown without the mat as well .
The floors are spotless clean and painted well.
Interior is well fit and in great shape.
The "jail bars" along the windows are all in place as well as the original luggage rail at the top of the back seat.

Very clean.

And even nicer with the custom made sisal mat fitted to the rear deck.!

Great look!

The suspension has been lowered just slightly from stock with the use of dropped spindles
up front that retain the original ride softness, and in the back, the transmission has been swapped
for a long axle type 1 unit with "freeway flyer" gearing that allows the Bus to really keep up with
modern traffic, which is a big bonus for a Bus you want to actually USE instead of sit and stare at.
The original trans with it's gearing and the "gear reduction" boxes at each wheel really slow things down.

The underside of this Bus has been fully painted and detailed and is in super clean shape.
I like the details of the fresh hardware on the spring plates and everything painted so cleanly.
Better than new as far as appearance, and I would say the same when it comes to the performance of it as well.

Gorgeous under here!

The stock 14" wheels are powder coated in white and fitted with stainless trim rings, thin whitewall radial tires and a
nicely detailed hubcap with the emblem painted.

The bumpers are superb, and the builder has gone to the extent of creating custom gaskets
to fit the bumper wherever the metal parts touch.
This is pretty slick as it seems that paint chipping occurs easily at these joints and this certainly helps
make that a thing of the past.

The interior is all new and in superb shape.
The materials used are original VW pattern and correct for the Bus and color combination.
The mesh pattern was originally on the center of the side panels only
but bringing that into the seat tops as well, really makes the interior pop...it is a great color combo!

Matching grab handles have been stitched up and fitted under the folding coat hooks.

Fresh air box is cleanly painted and detailed with all fresh screws.

Dash looks awesome.
Originally with this color combo, the dash would be white, as well as all the interior paint.
What is great about going with the lower color in here from a design approach
is that it keeps the interior all in the same colors...the dash does not stand out as much and
it also gives the driver a much better color experience.
It has always kinda bugged me to drive a Bus like this with the white dash...
they all seem the same, regardless of the color. Here with it this way...you know, see and feel the green (if you know what I mean!)

Wheel houses are all painted pretty...this one is super clean.

The mild lowering improves handling greatly and it is not done so low
as to be a problem when driving.  It seems in fashion these days to drop them so low
that the bumper scrapes the ground...it may look cool, but it makes driving a challenge.
With it set like it is here, it looks better, and drives better.

Gorgeous.

Here you can see the cab all together with the floor mat in place.
Looks great.
Another nice detail that many will not catch, is that the builder made a matching interior
panel for behind the front seat, complete with chrome trim just like the door panels!
This is not an original thing...but it looks like it should be!

Door jams are excellent, all new hardware on the hinges...very nice attention to detail.

Original dash clock
And cheack out the nice work with the grab handle.
This is an original VW part, but for a much earlier model
and normally the inset is done in a grooved rubber.
Here, done in the matching material...it really looks cool!

This early multi band radio is gorgeous, and the backing plate is something I have not seen like this before.

I spy a cool accessory "day-night" shade on the rear view mirror in this shot.

Not only did he create this great trim panel for behind the seat, he stitched up a matching spare wheel cover!!

Awesome!!

The original "M code" tag is still visable and it shows that this Bus was originally delivered
from the factory in this color combination.

Very nice to see the correct end panel under the center seat, with the proper aluminum trim.
A very tough find these days!

Even the kick panel under the back seat is correct and has the proper aluminum trim in place.

Center seat has early style polished grab handles instead of the original plastic ones...much classier!

On the diverder wall is another early handle with the same treatment as the dash handle...
so much cooler looking than the sheap plastic ones that were fitted factory to this year.

Beautiful!!

The engine room is spotless and the builder had a little fun
with upgrading the performance of the engine, but keeping the look totally stock.

All the original style air cleaner is in place and everything done with that original look.

But the displacement has been increased to 1776 cc and the electrics converted to 12 volt.
Still single carb and single port manifold, but tuned to run proper with a slightly larger carb and an 009 distributor.

Super clean inside here

Headliner is excellent

Period picnic goodies are included in the sale and are a fantastic touch.

Too cool!

The Bus does have a clean California title by the way, plates were just removed for the photos.

Super straight down the sides!

That wood slat roof rack is a super cool accessory as well.

In closing this is truly a gorgeous example.
Very mild upgrades to make it just a bit unique and more drivable in our fast paced world of today
but the classic look and style of the original is kept in place.
The best of both worlds to be sure.
