While attending the recent Bug-In 35 event here in So Cal, I was walking the rows of show cars and was stopped in my tracks
by this gorgeous 23 window. As I stood there drooling, the owner walked up and tapped me on the shoulder...I turned to
recognize a past customer and fellow VW nut and he smiled and asked me what I thought. After gushing about how nice it
was he said..."You know...I wanna sell it. And I want to see it on Oldbug!".
The camera came out and the serious inspection started... below are the results!

OK...first of all, it is simply drop-dead gorgeous in all respects.
The paint and body are superb and it is truly a showpiece. The restoration has just been completed and the Bus has
less than 50 miles on it since it was done. The Bug-In was the first major showing and it has already managed
to secure feature articles in two major VW magazines, one here in the US and the other in the UK!
So it's not just me that thought it looks nice!!

The thing I liked most about it is the stuff you dont normally look at.
We all know what a 23 window Bus looks like...so my approach to this listing is going to be a little different than most.
Im going to start at the bottom and work my way up...just the way the restoration was done..."ground-up"
Lets start by looking at the "dirty bits" (which are anything but dirty on this Bus)

Surgically clean is the term that popped to mind when photographing the engine room...

Freshly rebuilt stock "bastard" 40 horse , stale air engine...just like it should be.

Very nice level of detail in every nook and cranny.

All truly showroom new.

Its always nice to see someone go to the effort to restore a car to this level.
Ive restored a ton of cars in my day but never quite to this level...and it is inspiring to see it.

Some great details such as the Bosch logo on the battery!

And the underside of the engine is just as clean...in fact the whole chassis was pretty much spotless.

This is a "mirror-worthy" chassis...part it at the show with mirrors underneath it, and watch the crowds "ooh and ahhh".
If it were mine, I would do that for a while just for fun... and then just start driving it!
Others may prefer to park it in their sparkling showroom and pray to it...but a car is meant to be driven
and I would urge the new owner to do that...because these Busses are seriously fun to drive and enjoy!

Wow...better than they were when new!

OK... rather than word-it all up I just let the photos above speak for themselves...are you with me here?
This is no normal restored 23 Window Bus.

Lets proceed...

Back up top I was very taken by the paint and body quality.
This is nice nice work...look at the clarity in the reflection here...dreamy.

The 15" Bus wheels are correct and the wide whitewall tires really dress them up.
The large logo hubcaps arent "proper" for a 1960, but they do look very nice.
The stainless trim rings are also not original but look fantastic!!

The bumpers are beautifully done with the proper aluminum trims.
The rubber trim between the guards and overriders help keep things tidy and chip-free.

Correct small glass taillights.

Registered as a Historical Vehicle here in California.
Van Wyk plate frames are choice additions.

Nice fit to all panels.

Safari front windows are a must-have accessory.

Fluted Euro style headlight lenses.

Bullet turn signals

Oh...it's a VW (in case you were wondering!)

"One eye duck" wiper holder keeps the wipers out of the way when you open up the Safari's

All new window rubber and body seals...

The skylight windows!

All side windows are pop-outs on this Bus and all have the long "spoon" latches.

Sunroof cover is new (of course)

The corner windows....it's all about the corner windows!

Vent trims

Very well done on the outside, amazingly clean on the underside...lets look inside now....

Here's the "room with a view" shot from behind.
There is nothing else quite like this in the motoring world.
Its no wonder that these Busses are such Icons and are in such strong demand.

OK...inside... more spotless beauty!

I love the period accessory compass and the nicely plated visor brackets and hardware.

Headliner is well-fit.

Correct 70mph clear needle speedometer.

Horn button.
Steering wheel is very clean and well restored.

Very nice early Sapphire 1 radio with the big buttons!

Floors are immaculate and the controls all well restored.

Seats are done in the proper stitch patterns and materials.

Door hardware is all clean and detailed.

Under the mats the floors are solid and very clean.

Under the front seat as well.

Matching spare tire and wheel.

Rear seating is correct and looks great!

Nicely fitted and trimmed out.

Here you can see the material grain up close...the light grey material is quite hard to find...nice to see it done right.
The paint detail in the ashtray ribs is a nice little touch...not "correct" by purist standards...but I like it!

Latches are all clean and fully functional, all new door seals and such.

Kick panel on the center seat.

And below the rear seat.

Rear seat upholstery is superb.

Armrests are in place.

Coat hooks and assist straps.

Grab handles on the center seat are very nicely restored.

Jailbars are all present and accounted for.

Clean

Under the carpet on the luggage deck, the owner has fitted some nicely varnished wood strips.
This is not original, but it does help keep the carpet flatter and it looks pretty styligh at the same time.
These are not screwed in place...no holes.

Cargo floors are very nicely restored as well.

So...there we have it.
This is a gorgeous Bus inside and out...ready for show time or weekend bliss.
Its one of the nicest we have had listed on the site. An impressive addition to any collection!
