1971 Deluxe Microbus - Original 1 Owner Car!
Very very straight body and incredibly solid.
Blue California plates.
Nice and straight down the sides with only a few minimal dings and scratches
Amazing that this is the original paint as well!
Windows are all good and the rubbers are holding up.
Rockers are perfectly solid and rust free.
No bondo, no patches...all original stuff here.
Excellent tires on the proper 71 Bus 14" wheels.
The nose of the Bus from the beltline down was resprayed at one point to
take care of stone chips
(not body damage)...the white paint above the beltline is original.
The bumpers look to have been resprayed at one point too.
Amazingly solid and clean around the windshield
Excellent body
Good tread on the rubber
The chassis is completely solid and rust free!
Perfect
Another shot down the side...a straight old Bus to be sure.
Many places you look you can see signs of the original owner's care...a
rag in the gas door to wipe up any spills.
(nice locking gas cap too)
Aluminum trim is in nice shape as well.
This is the only other spot where it looks like some paint touch up has
been done...this rear corner...the white only has been resprayed.
Lenses look to be all the orignal German stuff.
Volkswagen script emblem
Engine room is nice and clean.
The 1600cc dual port engine runs well and is very clean.
There are receipts for the most recent rebuild.
Being the picky guy I am I think it may be time for a valve adjustment
and perhaps a re-torque of the heads...
but I believe the engine to be in fine shape and the seller has driven
it long distances without any issue.
Its a turn key runner!
Super dry and clean in the engine room...original paint of course.
Battery side is clean...I did note one very small patched spot under the
battery...I will show you a pic from below in a bit.
Underside of the engine lid looks clean
No heavy build-up of muck underneath it...well cared for a well serviced
it's whole life.
Trans
Very very solid.
No rust in the fender wells or anything like that...dreamy!
OK..here is the shot from under the battery...that little spot is the only
rust I found on the whole Bus.
And a nice panel has been put above it to prevent any break-through.
Clean machine.
The interior is very clean as well and the only things that are not 100%
original are the front seat covers
and the front seat belts. The original belts are included in the sale...but
fresher belts are in place now.
Door panels are excellent originals.
Front floors are dreamily perfect...original paint up here...no repairs
ever.
Rubber floor mat in nice shape
Dash is excellent
The painted section of the dash here has always been covered and is amazingly
clean.
I saw two hairline cracks in the dash pad...the rest is superb.
Multi band Blaupunkt radio with VW logo knobs is original to the Bus.
Steering wheel is in nice shape...very clean and shiny and only a couple
chips at the center.
All the original decals are in place. Original VW key as well.
The Bus was ordered through the "tourist delivery program" and
was picked up direct from the factory.
This little sticker over the original speedo glass shows the speed in kilometers...these
were almost always removed
when the cars landed on US shores, but this one is unbelievably still in
place!!
Here's another great fanatical owner detail...a home made pad for the gas
pedal...cool!
Super nice under the dash
original headliner!!!
Wow that is nice for the original stuff dont you think?
I saw one or two very small flaws in the material...but I was quite impressed
with the condition.
A view in from the driver's side.
Original panels are very clean and even have the proper small chrome trim
in place.
The floors are amazing!
I think the front seat covers were replaced at one point...but with the
proper color and materials.
Build sticker shows production date of April 1971.
Here's the body tag number as well.
Clean ashtray.
Rear passenger compartment is all very nice
Original material on the rear seats and the panels are original as well.
Again with the superb original floors
Sliding door panel in great shape too
Even the handle instruction sticker is in place
Clean
View from behind
The carpet in the back here is the original stuff. It has been covered
since new and is in simply amazing shape.
Spare tire cover.
Spare wheel and tire held in place by the original strap...wow this is
clean!
Rear hatch latch
The carpet is awesome!
It was covered by a layer of cardboard as well as a layer of plastic to
keep it like new.
Inner panel on the hatch is clean
Here's the icing on the cake...all the original manuals and documentation
back to day one!
Service records for all work done.
original delivery paperwork when the Bus landed on US shores just before
Christmas in 1971.
The letter on the left is correspondence between the owner and the shipping
company that brought the Bus here from Germany
when the original owner was done with tripping around Europe.
Radio warranty card
New vehicle warranty voucher.
Factory delivery stamp
Delivery inspection stamp at Hannover...a few from around Europe and then
the first dealer stamp
in San Diego where the Bus has remained it's entire life (although now
about an hour north in Orange County)
This is the best part...this single log book documents every tank of gas
put in the Bus since new!!
At the bottom of the second page is the calculations for conversion from
litres to gallons after the trip!
Final filled page shows fuel stops in 2009...the whole history in one book...simply
amazing.
The Bus has 260K miles on it, but you would absolutley never believe it
by looking at the condition.
This old German fellow took care of it in such an amazing way...a true
testament to what proper car care can get you.
Here is a receipt for the engine rebuild.
The engine was rebuilt at the end of 1997 at 20,817 on the odometer.
It reads a bit over 60k miles right now...so roughly 40k mile on this engine.
Transmission was rebuilt at the same time!
What a great story and a gorgeous original Bus.
Here's another little cool deal that illustrates the care the Bus has been
given over it's life.
Hand stictched dash cover with steel strenthening wires in side covered
the original dash...
Under the cover was a custom two layer cardboard gap filler to keep the
dash cover level and keep crumbs
and stuff from falling down into the little gap between the window rubber
and the glass.
And under that to fill the gape even better is a custom cut section of
hose...
A whole lot of work to keep the dash nice...but look how well it worked...look
at how clean it is and
how nice the screws and such are. I just love this sort of stuff!
Original tool roll is totally complete and amazingly clean.
The jack is in place as well
And to cap it all off here is a photo of the amazing man that has kept
this van in great condition since
day one!! You sir...are an inspiration to a schmuck like me who drives
his cars into the ground.
I dont think there are many folks out there that care this well for their
cars... I think we all should...but it takes time and dedication.
Hopefully the new owner will continue with the same level of care and the
Bus will remain well preserved for many years to come.
great Bus, great condition and an even greater story.
