1951 VW Split Window Beetle Project For Sale

This 1951 Beetle has just emerged from long term storage here in Southern California.
It was owned by a VW enthusiast that had great plans of restoring, but life had other things in store
for him and it remained stashed away for decades.

The car rolled off the assembly line March 21st 1951 and was originally delivered to Sweden.
This letter from Volkswagen dated back to the 70's shows that it was an 11C model, but does not reference the original color.
The original engine number is noted, but sadly the engine is no longer
with the car and it currently has one from a later 50's model.

Here is a peek inside the "tomb" where the car sat for so long, covered in a shipping container and
blocked in with piles of boxes.

The car was basically stripped to a rolling shell, but the parts for it were carefully stashed away
on shelves and in boxes. It is mostly complete, but there are a few bits that are missing I am sure
and there are some incorrect parts on it as well.

The current owner has loosely assembled it and has gathered all the bits together
and has given us a nice array of photos so you know what you are getting.

The strongest positive with the car as I see it (other than being a split...which is obviously desirable)
is that it looks to be really solid underneath.

Front end is also extremely straight and solid, it does not look like it has been hit up front or repaired
as so many have been.

Correct big cap fuel tank in nice shape.

A lot of the important parts are here.

The dash pods have correct original gauges, but the faces have been hand painted at some point in the past.
Looks like some added switches and lights as well.
Ashtray, dome light, semaphore and starter switch, even the early handle escutcheons are here.

This is a "crotch cooler" car as well, which is a big bonus.

Correct early seats ahere here.

Floorpans and heater channels look pretty solid.

Not bad at all eh?

The car was bule at one point, and it looks like someone was in the process of painting it red.
Im not sure what the original color was though as most everything shows signs of repainting.

There is some odd repair here above "Napoleons Hat" where the body meats the chassis
at the front firewall here. The seam looks to have been fiber-glassed smooth.
No clue that is under there...but it is what it is.

Rear seat

Another chassis shot...looks pretty good!

Door glass has the correct ventilation notch.

Grooved handles

The hood and fenders all appear to be later model replacements

Body is really nice and straight all the way around.

Build a split and do it the way you like.
Its a wonderful canvas to start with for your own masterpiece.

While it is not 100% complete or correct, it is a genuine Split with documentation
and a solid body and chassis on which to build from. Many of the hard to find early parts are present.
A great start towards a dream machine!
