1961 VW Beetle Convertible For Sale
Anyway...this 1961 Beetle Convertible was restored a few years back here
in Los Angeles
by the second owner. Its current owner has had it for about three years
now and he
had the car with him in Hawaii while he was there. Now he's living here
in California
and it's time to see it off to a new home as it is just not getting the
use that it once did.
It's a nicely restored car, not done to real accurate standards as far
as authenticity, but done to a very nice
personal level with very good taste. The dark green color looks great with
the tan top and interior and the
chrome wheels give it just a slightly more racy appearance. The quality
of the workmanship on the car is
very good. When the restoration was done whoever did the work was skilled.
It's not a flawless car
but it was done to an acceptable level in my book...and hopefully yours
as well.
I must apologize for the slightly fuzzy photos here...it was getting late
in the day and I must have had a smudge on the lens.
(the car looks sharper in person I assure you)
Stock ride height, no noteable modifications, a very solid and straight
car.
Chrome is good all the way around, nice fit and finish to the body panels.
Clean under the hood with a nicely fit carpet kit and matching spare wheel
Clean front apron
A little dirty in the spare tire well but it looks pretty straight up here.
Looks like maybe a very slight tap to the front end at one point, but very
light indeed
Underside of hood has a sound deadener type finish and has been painted
body color.
Give the hood a nice solid feel to it.
Canvas top is in very good condition.
There are perhaps a couple of slight dirt marks but otherwise excellent.
Again we have good chrome and a nice fit to all the panels.
An old reliable 40 horse engine powers the car. Converted to 12 volt electrics.
The engine isnt particularly clean but it sure does run nice.
Brakes are excellent, clutch and transmission are very good, the steering
is tight and all the electricals are in order.
Really a good running and driving car. My test drive was quite enjoyable
indeed.
A couple of stickers on the bumper, one being a parking pass from Hawaii.
These are aftermarket replacement bumpers by the way, not the German ones,
but they are in very good shape.
Very nice and straight down the sides.
Excellent window rubber all the way around.
I noticed one very small rock chip in the windshield down real low near
the wipers.
On the ridge of the hood there is some signs of the paint cracking and
lifting just a hair.
It has not broken through at this point but it is close.
Wolfsburg crest and a nice accessory hood handle trim.
The Karmann badge.
A couple dings in the chrome trim by the vent wing
and a couple spots along the bottom edge of the drivers side ventwing where
the chrome has pitted and
it has been dabbed with silver paint to seal it.
One noteable scratch on the passenger side rear fender.
Excellent tires all the way around on chrome wheels with standard hubcaps.
Chrome around the windows has all been redone at some point and it looks
nice.
Window rubbers have all been replaced.
Very attractive interior.
Gorgeous restore steering wheel.
Clean speedo, aftermarket fuel guage.
Nice smooth paint on the dash, nice accessory lighter and the radio block
off plate keeps it all clean looking.
In the glove box is hidden a modern stereo with CD player.
Small tweeters attached to each door.
Other speakers mounted to the kick panels under the dash.
Check out that cool square weave carpet by the way...really nice.
There is some slight staining to the carpets in the corners but overall
it's still looking good.
Custom matched floor mats protect the carpet below.
Shifter lock is a nice addition as well.
Door panels and seats are done in a vinyl and tweed combination...very
tasteful.
Sorry for the color variations here in the photos...some photos were with
flash while others were not...hence the difference.
It all matches though in person so dont you worry.
Seats have a few small spots (could use a little spot cleaning) but are
in very good shape.
Rear seat nice as well.
Behind the rear seat is a car cover and jumper cables. Nice parcel tray
to keep things out of sight.
Rear mats dont match exactly like the fronts do.
Ooops...this needs some scrubbing.
It looks like this will clean up though...must have had a little moisture
under the mat.
Headliner is in good shape.
Correct rear view mirror and nice padded visors.
Top down and ready for that warm evening cruise.
Clean car and a good look.
OK...underneath lets take a peek and see how solid she is... looking good
here!
Nice and solid.
Passenger side under the battery is even solid and sound.
Looks like there may have been some very minor welding done in the past
but it is well done and appears to be very solid indeed.
Fender wells all look great too
One little bubble spot just starting to poke through in the passenger side
front wheel well.
It has been treated with a rust neutralizer which should help slow it down
a little.
I would suggest a good heavy undercoat to keep it all solid.
Drivers side looks great
Bottom of the engine is a little grimy... a good degreaing would help clean
this up a bit.
In closing this is a great car for someone who wants a clean and solid
driver of a convertible for a reasonable price.
It gets a lot of looks on the road and is clean enough to feel at home
at any VW event. Its probably not a trophy winner
but you never know at the smaller shows...you might just place.
Its a good runner and driver, has minimal signs of age and its hard to
deny that it's a great color combo...
even if they never built them like this at the factory.
With top quality restored examples selling for upwards of $20-25K these
days...this one is a heck of a buy.
