1962 Type 3 Notchback
The early Type 3's were available in a standard model, referred to as the
"N" and the deluxe model
which was referred to as the "S". This car is the N model and
it appears that they are a good bit rarer
than the S model...it was the 60's and people liked chrome I guess. Neither
the N or S model Notchbacks
were officially imported into the US, so even today they are a rare sight
to see.
This particular example is a very early model that was imported from Germany
in recent days.
It is an all original survivor car, not restored and is phenomenally complete
and correct with it's equipment.
It appears that it may have had a little paint touch ups in spots but the
only other thing that looks like it has been touched
has been newer tires of course...it's a very clean and impressive car to
the real enthusiasts.
The paint has a very nice gloss to it and the body is very solid and straight.
There are a scattering of stone chips in the paint and a few slight dings
in spots but thats about it.
European issue headlights.
The proper VW logo on the hood (look closely...this is different from most
that you have seen)
Here you can see some of the stone chips.
The German plate is the one that was on the car when it was last registered
in Der Fatherland.
The owner has all the importation documents and some historical paperwork
on the car as well.
Excellent glass in the original rubber all the way around.
This "wide chrome" set up is one of those early model attributes
that is very cool to see.
Replacement rubber that is on the market is designed for the thinner chrome
trim...so to see the original stuff is rare.
A little brush touch up in spots here and there...
Radial tires with the this whitewalls give the look of the vintage rubber
but with safer handling and better ride.
Smooth baby...smooth!
The N model did not have the chrome side trim that the S model did
so what you see here is correct.
Super straight backend, and again dripping with the original parts.
Another N model detail is the painted housings for the reflector base...the
S had chrome.
The 1500 emble, with the tall "5".
S model cars had chrome trim in the center of the license plate light...the
N did not.
Pop out quarter windows.
Mode smooth body panels.
It looks like the lower half of the passenger rear fender has been re-sprayed.
You really have to look close to see it.
There are a couple of spots in the paint that are a hair darker than the
rest...I tried to capture it here but it is hard to see.
At first you just think it is a shadow or aomething. It is very subtle
but it is there.
Original dealer badge on the front fender is ever so cool!
Just a great honest original car...well preserved, never modified or messed
with.
Under the front hood is extremely clean and tidy.
Original trunk liner in amazing condition.
Paint on the bottom side of the hood shines as bright as it did when it
rolled off the assembly line.
Original latches are still bright and shiny.
The body tag.
Original jack in place.
Very very straight and solid up front.
Note the single horn...another early Type 3 thing.
Washer bottle is in nice shape.
Spare wheel has the original finish and might possibly be an original tire.
Can anyone confirm this? Did they put Semperit tires on in 62?
Sure looks right...
Very pretty car.
more super clean trunk space!
The deck material is different than on later model Type 3's and boy does
it look nice.
Usually this is all greasy looking back here...
The N model cars had a single side draft carburator while the S had dual
carbs.
This engine runs very well and the car drives excellent.
The engine compartment has not been detailed, but it is still quite presentable.
All the original equipment is here such as the proper distributor and the
dome cap for the fuel pump.
The side draft carb.
A good few hours with some cleaner and polish in the engine compartment
and this baby will shine!
More clean original latches.
Excellent.
Close up of the flat Euro taillight lenses.
And the great Type 3 only mud flaps.
Very solid floor pans with no signs of welding.
Some ever so slight deterioration on the fender edge where it meet the
body.
A very very solid example indeed.
A little grungy under the transmission and such...but just normal road
grime.
OK...lets check out the interior!
Super clean dashboard!
Nice steering wheel too.
Early push button style switches.
Red needle gauges.
Odometer reads 30,000 kilometers...it is thought that it has 130,000 original
Kilometers.
Thats only about 80,000 original miles.
Dash pad is very clean...just one tiny crack visable.
Gorgeous coco mats cover the original carpet and rubber mats
A shot from the passenger side.
Note the shift knob and the little insert in the inner door handle...off
white, not black like later models.
Original upholstery!
It shows a little age but is still presentable...and it is the original
cloth and vinyl combo.
Back seat is also in good overall shape for being the original stuff.
Fold down center armrest looks like it has never been used.
Some slight seam pulls in spots as evident in this photo.
Cool luggage rail across the seat back.
Ashtrays are the correct ones with the raised centers and off white color.
All in nice original shape.
Seat bases are clean...in greay rather than in black as seen on the later
models,
the control knobs are grey as well...later ones were chrome.
Super clean in the door jams.
Original door panels are in impressive condition.
Drivers side too...just the most minor of wear.
Here's the worst spot of the interior... just standard wear and tear I
suppose...
Headliner is excellent,
Very clean original material.
So to wrap things up with this car...Ive gotta say I think it is one heck
of a find.
For being almost entirely original, being a 62 model which is darn early,
and being the N model which seems harder to find
I really like this car. Great runner and driver...just turn the key and
go, and keep up the preservation of the}
original parts of the car so future generations of Type 3 fans can refer
back to it as an example of the way the cars are really supposed to be.
A great buy!
Car is located in San Diego California.
