1964 VW Chop Top 80's Show Car For Sale

In January of 1984 I was a senior in high school in the hot bed of the Orange County California VW scene.
I had a 65 Beetle that I was working on and there were other guys in the school auto shop
that also had VWs and when the new issue of Hot VWs came out each month I remember soaking up every
detail and bit of information within the pages. When this car graced the cover...I was transfixed.

Not only by the car, but by the lovely lady stepping out of it.
The whole image was too much for a 17 year old to handle.

The car was built by Herb Weber and it was debuted at the "Last Bug In" in 1983
and I remember seeing it at the show so clearly. The car won "Best Full Custom" at the show
and every time I would see it at the local events I would drool.

The car was often shown with the full tilt display.Matching painted fuel cans and wheel ramps.
This car was a show headliner for sure!!

The car had many great attributes that made it stand out from the pack.
The chop top, suicide doors, drop down deck lid and all those amazing louvers.
The color matched two liter alloys I thought were awesome yet when it first debuted at Bug in it wore polished Centerlines.
Such a textbook perfect glimpse into the 80's Cal Look scene.
This car absolutely ruled!!

I was blown away to see that the car still exists and is still in Southern California.
It has obviously aged a fair bit (so have I) but you can still see that amazing ride within.
This is an iconic 80's custom Beetle that truly deserves to be restored and brought back to its original glory.

The engine that is in it currently looks like a basic 1600cc dual port
and the owner states that it "should" run.
He is going to give it a little tickle and see if it will fire up
but the car really needs something more fitting...lots of chrome and louvers would be nice.
The cut in the apron was the hinging point for the deck lid as it opened from the top!!

Here is the engine lid with the added hinge point section below, ready to be stripped and repainted.

Underneath the front hood the gas tank still shows the color matched paint.
Apron looks straight and solid.

The backside of the dash shows the custom wiring harness.

The dash and center console were a major killer detail on this car in the day.
The louvers, the instrumentation...all of it, so "RAD"!

Suicide hinged doors still work well.
Interior has pretty much all gone, but photos do remain in the Hot VWs feature article that can be used as a guideline.
The chassis appears solid and strong, everything is straight and sound... it is the perfect "base car" to build from.

There are some ripples on the roof that need to be worked out.

Looks like someone stood up here or something.

Some definite areas of paint cracking and lifting.

Drivers side quarter panel also has some waves to work out

As to be expected with an old show car like this, especially a chop top
there are some areas of filler that will need re-doing.

The roof and this panel are really the worst spots, and they are totally workable.

The former show stopper is crying out those Rossi headlights begging for someone
to take on the task and ride the time machine back to the 80's
This car really needs and deserves it!

A dent on the top of the passenger side fender as well.

I really love this thing and I am fighting with myself that urge to be the guy to restore it,
but I must pass and let it go to someone else. The current owner had the same dream but is in need of funds for
more important things at the moment and is reluctantly setting it free to make that happen.

Truly one of the 80's most iconic custom Beetles.
Hot VWs cover car, Full Custom show winner at Bug In 31.
The body is all here and the image remains...it is just begging for a
make-over and to be brought back out to glory where it belongs!
