1956 VW Right Hand Drive Oval Beetle Sedan For Sale

Now here is something you don't come across every day in the US VW scene!
This is a factory original right hand drive Beetle that rolled off the assembly line in Australia...yes...Australia!

In 1954 Volkswagen started building cars for the Australia and New Zealand markets in a new factory in Australia.
In the early days the factory basically assembled cars that were produced in Germany and shipped in pieces.
This type of arrangement was referred to as CKD (Completely Knocked Down). CKD cars were then built
on site in more remote locations and often fitted with smaller parts obtained from local vendors.
Quite often glass and electrical items were from local suppliers and in some case have very minor differences from the
German made counterparts. In 1956, just two years into VW Australia, they had ramped up production
to just over 9,000 cars per year. This pales in comparison to German production of course...which makes this
car even higher on the rarity scale.

So...it's an Oval, which is cool.
It is an early CKD car, produced in Germany but assembled in Australia...which makes it rare.
And it is in all original condition with only 35,000 original miles since new...which makes it amazing.

Original wood slat roof rack

Extremely clean dash and interior...and that steering wheel on the "wrong side" is just oh so cool!

Very cool vintage mileage counter recently added to the car.

Still some decals and such from its past life in the land of Oz

Fun accessory "bee catcher" vent included with the sale.

This is all original paint by the way! Its not perfect but WOW it sure doesnt suck either!!

Excellent body on this car, extremely straight and virginal.

Shines so sweet!

The third brake light is a nice accessory and helps keep the traffic informed of your actions much better than just the little factory lights.

More great decals

This great vintage clip on mirror has been recently added to aid in visibility

Another very nice thing about the car is that it is so smooth and simple without the
tall bumper giards and towel rail overriders of the US spec models.
The design is more pure, and more beautiful just as you see it here.

The fluted headlight lenses are in fantastic shape, all electrical works well on the car.

So sweet

The interior is what really impresses me on this car...this is all original and untouched
and it is in shockingly nice shape.

Wow!!

Just amazing

Original wool headliner is in fantastic condition

The floors under the mats still shine all glossy

Super rare rear view mirror clock recently added to the car as well.

Carpet being the rear seat.

So nice

The coco mats help protect the original rubber flooring and look great in the car.
Some staining in the original carpets and some wear from rings and fingers on the controls

Awesome turn signal switch!

35,000 original miles!!
The little sticker overlay shows the conversion to Kilometers per hour.

Very clean and untouched under the front hood.

The car retains a full set of amazing Olympic bias ply tires that look to be possibly originals...
I dont know what the Aussie cars came with, but it is obvious that these have been on the car for a very very long time.

Fire extinguisher for safety...nice clean tool roll and trunk liner.
Original wiring cover also in impressive shape.

Original jack in place

One of the cleanest original 4 tab hoods I have seen in years.
ALL the sheet metal on this car is original to the car.

So nice

Wiring is spectacular behind the dash.

So clean!

The Aussie factory used a reddish primer, that you can see coming through here after a little brake fluid spill.
Note that the tags still show as made in Germany, but the stamping in the body below is different than the German cars.
These are indeed "German Built" cars, but they were "assembled" in Australia.

Never hit, extremely straight.

Original paint on the wheels too

Very solid

Floor pans are as sound as can be...very solid and rust free example

So solid!

Never undercoated in the fender wells either...so you can see that smooth original steel.

Nice light fade on the top of the taillight housing.
There are a few chips and scratches around the car, the paint is not perfect, but it is also 60 years old!
It is a delightful mild patina...these little flaws just show the world that it is REAL!

The original numbers matching 36 hp engine runs like a top and the current
owner has put about 10,000 miles on the car since he bought it about 10 years ago.
It gets run and used and has been wonderfully maintained.

The original apron is super straight and solid, but someone has painted the center section black at some point...who knows why.
There is a crank start hole here in the apron and a special crank start nut on the pulley.

Under the lid is all clean and original as well

Hums like a sewing machine!

This support loop for the hand crank is awesome as well.

I guess you dont want to be stuck in the outback with a dead battery and nothing but a kangaroo to jump start you!

Super dry

Oh...original running boards as well...note how the grroves stop short of the edge.

Here is a spot where the paint has been worn through on the fender.
Its interesting to see this color poking through, it looks a lot like coral red...but it is indeed the original
base coat that they used on these CKD cars. I have seen other all original examples with this same color below the top finish.

In closing this really is a spectacular car and is an extremely rare find, not only for it's history and origin,
but for the impressive all original condition.
This is a ar that you would spend a lifetime trying to find an equal to, especially here on American shores.
