1968 VW Beetle Sedan For Sale

This wonderful survivor 68 is making a second pass through Oldbug.
Its current owner bought it through the website earlier this year as a bit of retail therapy
to help him cope with a major health issue, and now unfortunately that health issue has progressed
and is keeping him from enjoying it as he had hoped.  No changes have been made to the car
and its only been driven a couple times on short runs with the grandchildren.
It is currently located in South Carolina and our goal is to find it a wonderful new home.

The year 1968 was a year of many changes for the Beetle.
Like the 67 model the year prior, there are many small details that are "one year only" updates.
The biggest changes for 68 were safety related, such as the larger bumpers and padded dashboard.
New larger taillights were introduced and subtle changes were made to the body design.
As time passes and values have risen on the 67 and older models, I am seeing an increased interest in the
late 60's and early 70's cars. The "early" late models from 68-70 seem to be leading the way
and for very good reason. They are great cars to drive in today's world and they still retain
the charm and simplicity for easy maintenance and repair.

This 1968 model is an awesome find due to its purity and originality.
So many of these cars have been used and abused and modified like crazy,
to find one that still retains most of its original paint and is as well kept as this example are a rarity.

The color of this one too is great, Savannah Beige, perhaps one of the most popular for the year
and it still looks great today. I love the two tone wheels and thin whitewalls and the fact that
it has a bunch of the original accessories fitted.  Its a really attractive little car.

Original owners manuals, dealer pouch, sales brochure and dealer network booklet included.

Originally sold in Seattle Washington to a Harry and Thelma Norton.
They obviously kept the car well during their ownership.

Sold originally at Freeway VW

Cool dealer applied sticker on the owners manual

Dealer service stamps in the manual show regular maintenance during its early years.

Stamps  from Avalon VW also in Seattle

Original sales date of Tuesday May 21st 1968
On that same day Chicago Cubs Billy Williams set the outfielder record of 695 straight games
and the nuclear powered submarine USS Scorpion with 99 men aboard was reported missing
and was later found at the bottom of the ocean near Azores.

This original delivery info in the booklet are important in that they also verify the original
chassis and engine number.

And that original engine remains in the car today which is a major bonus for collectors.

The 1500cc engine has been rebuilt at some point in its life and is very clean.
It also runs super smooth and fires right off at barely the click of the key.
This is one of "those cars" that you just get that awesome feeling from.
Its definitely one of the good ones!

Looks like the coil , fuel pump and crank pulley are the only real "non original" items
the rest look all together stock and original.
Even the hose clamps on the fresh air hoses look like the original German VW ones.

I love how clean the original paint is in the engine compartment and under the engine lid.

Check out that shine!

I just love it!!

The car is rock solid underneath as well, no rust, no signs of there ever being any welding or repairs.

Dreamy solid underneath!

Under the front hood it is very clean as well.
A carpet trunk liner has been fitted and is in really nice shape.
Chrome spare wheel and a nice radial tire.

Original paint again in here with a very nice shine.
Looks very clean around the brake fluid reservoir which is really nice to see.
One spill of fluid and this spot turns messy...but not on this car.

Front apron looks excellent, original tire pressure decal in place.

Super cool to see the factory washer bottle in place and held in place with the correct little plastic pegs
that almost always go missing.  I know...I'm geeking out on the little goofy things again,
but I think these details go a very long way in showing just how well a car has been maintained .

Original jack and handle are still in the holder.

Looks very straight on the sides, no signs of any serious collisions or repairs.

Original tool roll is still here as well

Too cool!

Even the gas door reveals an original octane sticker.

The vast majority of the car retains its original paint which is very cool to see.
It has had paint repair on three of the fenders and one small spot on the hood, but it all has a very
soft and consistent patina and age to it.

Original bumpers with the accessory VWOA bumper guards in place.
Headlight bulbs have been upgraded to H4 units which are a bit brighter.
The spot on the hood that has been touched up is just forward of the turn signal,
The rest of the hood is original paint.

Glass is all in excellent shape.

Body is very straight down the sides and the paint holds a nice shine.
It looks like the front quarter panel here may have been repainted and there is a little paint loss just above the trim
that could be carefully touched up if it bothered you at all.

Accessory vent shades on the door are cool

Pop out quarter windows are a definite plus.

Gravel guards as well are a nice original addition.

Love those door handle scratch guards as well.
Check out that original paint in this pic as well, and the cleanliness of the chrome and trim.
This is one very well kept car.

There are a couple spots on the car where that original Savannah Beige is wearing thin like here on the roof.
Its not something that jumps out at you super strong (I had to snap this one in the shade to show it clearly).
What I like about these spots is that they prove the originality of the car and give it just a little character.
They are only original once as they say.

Here is another spot at the top of the drivers rear fender.
Just a bit too much polishing over the years perhaps?

Step back and the car looks like a million bucks.

It is not perfect body wise, and each fender seems to have a little scratch or ding, but all of it
is minimal and to be expected with a car that is over 50 years old and is un-restored.

Chrome is excellent on the car and the tops of the rubber strips on the bumper guards
still show the original VWOA markings on them.

The amber turn signal lenses look great on the car.

Here are a couple of bright sun shots of the car.

Shes a beauty!

All stock and proper.
A survivor car like this carries an innocence to it that is just so attractive.
After seeing so many examples that have lead hard lives and have been "restored" over and over again
I just get all excited when I see one in this sort of shape.

Here are a couple scratches on the passenger front fender.
These could easily be touched up by hand to make it look even better.

This rear fender has been repainted but looks to be the original as does all the sheet metal

There is a little paint checking on this fender just above the taillight.

Moving to the interior the very clean and well kept condition continues.

Dash looks amazing and all stock.

Steering wheel and column are so sparkly clean!

Odometer reads 11190 miles at the time of these photos.
It is believed to have turned over just once.

Fantastic Blaupunkt Emden radio with the original VW logo knobs!
And it works!

All the markings are clean and bright on the ashtray and knobs.

Ashtray is clean inside as well.

Glovebox is the original and is still strong and fuzzy.

Original tire load and pressure sticker.

Dealer applied lug nut torque sticker.

Carpet has been replaced at some point and is in good condition with minimal wear.

Clean door jams with the seals and caps all in place and looking nice.

Door sill trims cap off the thresholds.

I love the color combo as well...so much prettier than just seeing basic black.

Seats are in great shape

Rear seat as well.
If you look carefully in this shot at the back edge of the front seat bottom
you can see some scuffs from the seat back rubbing on it.
You don't see it when the seat back is upright.

Headliner is original and in very nice condition.

No rips or tears or stains. The area just below the rear window must have had some
sunburn at one point which is common, in this case it was covered with matching headliner material
but it has wrinkled just a little from age.

Assist straps and coat hooks are in nice shape as are the inner seals for the pop out windows.

Even the original dome light is in place.

Door panels are in really nice shape and the pockets are still tight.
There is a little wear under the window crank on the drivers panel, otherwise excellent.

Super clean.

Even the door latches and seals all look good.

So sweet and so straight.

This is really a very good car.

Take a look around and compare this to other 68 models that are up for sale these days.
You will quickly see the differences and see why this one is such a special specimen.
They just don't come around often like this!
