1970 Karmann Ghia Convertible
The restoration of this little jewel has been recently completed and the
car has very minimal miles on it since
the last wrench was turned. In fact the longest drive it has taken was
out to my place in the middle of nowhere
for these photos...a good two hour drive each way from the owner's home...and
she ran beautifully.
In any case, this car is a full feature car in the current issue of Hot
VW's Magazine (October 07).
A gorgeous 4 page full color spread, and also featured in a small photo
on the cover as well.
So we arent talking about your average quickie resto Ghia here...this was
a full tilt, body off,
every nut and bolt affair with no expense spared. It is top quality stuff.
The color is "Salsa Red" a modern VW color that is absolutely
stunning on the car.
If you are going to paint a car red...take a look at this shade...it's
awesome.
Its a very attractive car and it gets even better as you get in close to
see the details.
The rear luggage rack is a nice touch.
California personalized plate is a great one too.
Clean title and current registration by the way...
New rubber, new lenses...heck...nearly new everything.
Nice stance...not too low.
Top quality "stayfast" canvas top with glass rear window.
Fully detailed Porsche alloy wheels with new tires all the way around.
Narrow 4.5" rims up front.
Very straight down the sides and very nice quality paint finish.
Here's a better shot in the shade showing the reflection in the paint...
Other side too...what awesome body lines these Ghias have!
H4 flat headlights give a slightly modern look.
Like the gentle flowing curves of the human form... you just want to caress
it and.... well never mind.. I'll stop there.
Very straight and smooth snout on the beast.
Passenger side headlight...
Are you liking what you are seeing here yet?
Detail of the Karmann Ghia body badge.
Underneath the nose is well detailed and clean,
While we are down here lets climb under for a look at the underbelly...
Front end is all fresh, new bushings, new shocks, disc brakes on the front.
Clean in the fender wells...fresh undercoating to keep it that way.
Smooth rocker panels.
Very clean floorpans.
Drivers side rocker.
Note the new hardware that holds the body to the pan...a nice touch.
Cant get much nicer than this.
The drivetrain is all fresh in the car as well and pretty spotless underneath.
Not overkill show level mirrors underneath kind of stuff... but obviously
built right
and kept clean.
The underside of the engine as well is nearly spotless.
Underside of the rear bumper and apron.
OK...now you have seen under her skirt... lets open up the tail and see
the heart of the machine.
Gorgeous detailing in the engine compartment and under all that chrome
is a freshly built 1907cc powerplant
that produces a very nice bit of horsepower over the factory 1600cc unit.
while keeping things at a tame
enough level that daily driving and normal traffic wont turn it into a
molten glob of goo.
Its a car that was built to drive...and she drives very well indeed.
Its very clean in here, and you can truly eat off
12 volt alternator, polished 009 distributor, powder coated tinware, aluminum
crank pulley.
Fully polished manifolds hold up the dual carbs...nice fittment to the
polished panels in the engine room.
Breather box mounted behind the fan shroud.
The polished panels in the engine room really give it some show power.
Neat stuff.
Nice detailing under the engine lid with the proper stock drain tray and
tubes in place.
Nice detailing on the hinges.
Simply stunning car.
Under the front hood is well detailed of course.
Trunk liner is excellent.
I like the looks of the rivets around the bulge for the fuel filler.
Very cleanly detailed around the latches and such.
Matching spare wheel and tire.
Paintwork down in the spare tire well is not exceptional, but the coverage
is good.
Clean nose from the inside with only the slightest sign of any repair.
Hood latch is clean.
More nice hinges.
Wow.
Top boot / tonneau cover can be pulled forward and snapped down to cover
the whole interior
or just fold it back like this to keep the top covered when down.
Interior is very very clean and tasteful.
Nice wood rim steering wheel
Porsche horn button
Clean instrumentation.
Odometer reads 1363 miles at the time of the photos which are the actual
miles since completion of the restoration.
So she's real fresh...barely broken in.
Modern Sony stereo system gives you an excellent soundtrack for your weekend
drives.
Great little tachometer in the dash.
Another shot of the clean dash...note the XM radio antenna on the dash
in the center.
Gene Berg locking shifter!
Front speakers are cleanly mounted.
Pedals show no wear.
Nice embroidered floor mats protect the carpet.
Super clean in the door jams...nice detailing.
Door panels are superb.
Note the custom billet aluminum window crank.
Detail of the material on the panels.
Seats are excellent, front and back.
A close up of the materials and stitching...very nice.
Subwoofer mounted in the rear area behind the back seat.
Headliner is excellent as well.
Small photo on the cover!
Very nice spread on the inside.
Over 4 pages of coverage of the car! That's a lot for Hot VW's!
So...if you want one of the cleanest Ghia Convertibles out there...this
car is certainly in the running.
Extremely well built from top to bottom, exceptionally clean and she runs
like a dream.
