1968 VW Sundial Camper Van For Sale

This mild mannered blue camper is much more than it first appears.
The  Bus has been in California it's whole life, which is a bonus as far as
the body is concerned, as it is a very very solid example.
Its current owner has had it many years and has built it as the ultimate cruising vessel for
his long trips into Mexico and to Southland surf spots.
The mechanical upgrades and other changes have all been fantastic improvements, making it one great little Bus.

The vehicle has been very well maintained it's whole life and the owner has a fat stack of receipts that document it all.

It was sold new at Clea Harrison VW in Long Beach California.
The dealer plate frames and original black plates are on the front and back.

The Bus has received a recent paint job (2009) and the body is excellent.
Very smooth across the nose.

Very clean around the windshield area...a common spot for rust.
New window rubber at the time of the paint work.

The body shop made a slight adjustment to the edge of the drip rail so that the rain drops down
the window post, rather than the glass...a good idea.

The interior is very clean and feautures quite a few small upgrades such as these
highback seats from an Audi.
The material underneath is worn on the driver's side, but the passenger side is good.
Nice Hawaiian print seat covers dress it up just the same.

Small auxillary switches have been installed.

Shifter extension makes the reach to the knob much easier.

The Bus features a disc brake set up from a 71 model Bus, and has the 5 lug wheels front and back to match.
The tires are brand new and the wheels have been powdercoated and topped off with new hubcaps.

Along with the Bus comes an assortment of spares including a whole bunch of new
body seals as well as a couple nose emblems for those not hot on the front mounted spare.

Small parts are included as well.

A bolt on trailer hitch is included as well, which is a wonderful accessory.

Hollywood bicycle rack included as well.

Here is a quick peek at the interior... one of the coolest original Camper set ups of the era...you are gonna love this!

Tease tease tease...the front brakes are from a 71 model which features a power brake booster that makes braking much easier.

Disc brakes on the front help slow the machine much better than the standard drum brakes found on most 68 models.
The brake drums in the back and wheel cylinders too have been recently replaced.

The chassis is very  solid on the Bus with no signs of rust.
The transmission was rebuilt in 2000 and has been upgraded with freeway flyer gearing.
This matched to the 1955cc stroker motor, makes it an extremely strong runner
that is capable of freeway driving in lanes other than the slowest!

Solid!

Threshold is a little scruffy looking but appears very solid.

Under the back seat is located the amplifiers for the extremely nice sounding audio system!

This has been a Bus used for a lot of travel...it is seriously road tested and is something that you can'truly hop in
and drive across the country if you like. The owner always keeps it loaded for those beach trips when the conditions are just right.

Of course he will clean out his personal belongings prior to the sale,
but the reason I like to show this stuff is that it helps prove that this is
not some relic that has been sitting un-used on the side yard.
This is a purpose built machine that is ready at any time for a road trip!

Steering wheel has a nice cover...dash has been fitted with modern instrumentation on a nice wood dash panel.

New carpets in the front are well fitted and look nice.

This particular Sundial camper kit is really awesome...check out the
table and the sink...really great layout and in wonderful original condition.

Dome light has a touch of the islands upon it!

Wood headliner panel is original and in very nice shape.
The Hawaiian print material here on the overhead shelf is directly from Hawaii, and behind it hides
some of the many speakers from the audio system.

Under the back seat hides the 10" bass subwoofer which gives the sound a very great fullness.

Original Sundial tag.

A few scratches on the panelling from use, but really very clean and tidy.

Jumpseat is nicely upholstered.

Medicine cabinet and mirror are a very slick period look feature.

Inside the fridge...clean and all original.

Plenty of room for the beverages of your choice and lunch too!

Fridge door closed...

Another detail of the countertops...nice!

Medicine cabinet

The rear bench is in very nice shape and flips out into a bed.

Love that table...and it unclips and stows away when not in use.

Very cool layout!

OK...how many times must I show the table?
Sorry about that...I just really like the shape of it.

Headliner of the drivers compartment is done to match the seats.

Head unit for the audio system is a basic unit that does feature an ipod adaptor.
What I like about this set up, is that at a glance it just looks to have a cheap radio in it...not worth
stealing while you are off in the water surfing...but you crank it up and it really sounds fantastic!

Dash panel is very nicely done with functional warning lights and stamped in lettering.

Floors are solid and are covered in Dynamat that helps keep road noise down quite well.

Original style door panels are in nice condition.

Looks nice...not show car stuff, but very clean and tidy and built for function, not fashion.

Another shot of the headliner and matching visors.

Three point seatbelts installed for safety.

Instruments are all functional.

Dash itself is quite clean.

Nice carpet mat up front.

Retractable seat belts.

Original California camper certification and Sundial badge.

Passenger panel has some slight discoloration.

Hop in...lets go on a trip!

Rear corners inside are carpeted...heeps things quiet and warm.

Storage area in the wall cabinet.

Cool.

Bed folded out and ready for slumber.

Clean and cozy!

Exhaust is a custom Magnaflow muffler set up...sounds great.

Dynamat fitted in the engine room to keep things quiet.

Air breather.

Auxillary oil cooler with electric fan behind...runs cool in all weather conditions.

Battery.

The engine is a 1955cc stroker set up with a billet crank, 90.5 pistons, 76 stroke, Hemi ground heads,
high pressure oil pump, 40mm Dual Kadron carburators dialed in by the mater at Low Bugget.
Recurved distributor with electronic ignition.
Runs on 87 Octane fuel perfectly, has plenty of power and hooked to the trans with the gearing it is the dream driver!

Everything is well tuned and ready to go...very strong runner and a great driver.

The paint is a very nice blue color with the white on top.
The final finish is not mirror-like, it has a bit of orange peel to it
but the body looks very straight and the paint itself is of high quality materials
to survive well against the  beach lifestyle and the weather that comes with it.

Super solid looking rockers.

Under the engine is very clean as well.
The owner is very fastidious with his care and feeding of this Bus.
He has always kept it in tip-top condition.

Tires are very nice 8ply Hankook brand rubber that give it the support it needs and great highway mileage.

Solid Bus!

Looks great in the fender wells too.

Straight down the sides.

Front mounted spare

Cleat California title with current registration.

The "Big A" in the backround...a So Cal icon.

Nice Bus!

Tires are excellent...here you can see the paint finish clearly...
a color sand and a buff would smooth it out if it bothered you...just a bit of "orange peel".

Original camper windows.

SOLID!

In closing this is really a heck of a Bus.
At first glance it looks pretty average, but as you look in deeper and hear the story of  the owner and what he has done to it,
the Bus really emerges as a fantastic traveller. I like it...and I hope you do too!
