1962 VW Beetle Sedan For Sale

This New Jersey based Beetle is a very impressive find on the East Coast.
Extremely solid and original car inside and out, never rusted or rebuilt and very very stock.

The car is not without flaw and it has had some paint and body work done before.
The owner estimates that about 50% of the car is still original finish.
The passenger side fenders show sign of replacement at some point during the life of the car.

The car overall looks extremely sweet and it is loaded with cool goodies such as the
white wall tires and roof rack. Pop out quarter windows and ventshades, mudflaps and gravel guards...its nicely accessorized.

Fantastic personalized plate and Vintage VW Club of America badge on the front.
This is truly a well loved VW enthusiast's car.

Crawling underneath we can see what is going on at the heart of the beast

Camper compensator is a nice addition and it looks like excellent radial tires grace all four corners.

Very clean and very solid

Check out that amazing floor pan!!

Seriously??  In New Jersey??
This is an underside shot we rarely see even here in the desert of California!

Impressive.
The owner does state that there are signs of rust repair in the drivers side rear fender well
at the back of the heater channel...but the rest looks great.

Super solid

The roof rack is a genuine VW accessory, not a reproduction.
The custom made wind splitter for the top is a unique item...but it keeps it significantly more quiet.

The original sticker on the rack

Love the whitewalls!

Solid under the back seat as well

Correct Hella lenses

Looks like the deck lid spring perch has had a repair at some point.

The engine in the car is a 40hp with a "big bore" kit that was rebuilt by the previous owner.
It is a "stale air" motor without the heater tubes from the fan shroud.

Original firewall material is still present

Very clean engine compartment

Now the date on this engine block puts it at a 1964 engine, however the owner does have an original 1962 engine
that he will include with the car if desired. It turns but will most likely need some attention.

The headliner and carpet have been replaced at some point.
The headliner being done in vinyl, but the carpet in the correct German square weave.

Seat upholstery is original and while it does show some age , it is impressive to see it this nice and still intact.

Door panels are originals as is the interior paint on the dash and door jams.

NOS floor mat up front that has been dyed the correct grey.

Fantastic period flower vase and Blaupunkt radio.

Lovely original insides...the shoulder belts in front and back are also a rare sight

The owner has tracked the mileage through past owners and believes the actual mileage is about 63,000

The history of the ownership is pretty fun.
Bought new by J. Davis "Doc" Sheppard.
"Doc" was born in Savannah Georgia and was a graduate of Georgia Tech.
He was a merchant Marine in WW2 and attained the rank of Lieutenant.
After the war he became a well known radio personality at WTOC and hosted
weekly live broadcasts from the Gold Room at the old DeSoto Hotel.
In 1948 he opened The Camera Center and was a charter member of the Tybee Light Power Squadron.
He also belonged to many other local organizations
and served on the church vestry at St Pauls Episcopal Church.

His wife Elizabeth was a retired school teacher that worked at the local library and the car was her primary driver
and her 3 mile round trip commute kept the mileage low and when it was sold to their next door neighbor in 1983
it only had about 13,000 miles on the odometer.

The car then traded hands and the new owner passed shortly after...the car went into storage for years
and his widow eventually gave it to her son in law who was the owner during the time of the fender damage and replacement.
He sold the car in Daytona Beach FL in 1995 and the mileage was approx 29,000.

The next owner kept the car for 9 years and sold it in 2004 to an Army Veteran
who kept it for two years and sold it to the current owner in 2006 with 37,800 miles on it.

There have been a number of butts in the seat over the years, but it appears that all of them have treated
the car with care. The overall mileage is low and it is wonderful to have a car with the full history known.

Very clean and untouched under the front hood.

Original jack still in place

Quite clean

There are several chips and scratches that have been carefully touched up in spots.

Some age to some of the window rubbers

Small ding in the fender

The wheels are an amazing set of original paint rims that
one of the previous owners located in Connecticut from a mechanic that stored
them in his basement for 33 years!

Some slight color variation on repainted panels if you look close.

Great looking car though...wow what a sweetheart!

In closing this is really a great find.
Its getting harder and harder to find nice honest original examples with full history.
I think this is a great buy, especially for a VW nut on the East Coast.
