1971 VW Type 3 Notchback For Sale

This is a rare bird in the US, a 1971 Notchback.
These cars were not imported to the US through the normal dealerships
and as a result the population of the model is mighty low in the states.
This particular came in from Canada where it was sold new,
others have been imported through Europe.

This particular car is located in Orange County California and has been a driver and fun
play toy for a well seasoned and well respected VW mechanic for quite a few years.

He has decided it is time to downsize a bit and let the Notchback go to a new owner.
It is a turn-key, ready to drive and enjoy car.

Al older restoration that shows some use and age but still respectable and with the custom wheels
and de-chromed sides it has a clean mild custom appearance.

The wheels on the car are very uncommon ATS alloys.

Good rubber all the way around. Disc brakes up front and drum in the rear.

Body is nice and straight and the paint is decent.
Definitely a driver level car, not a show car, but still clean enough to get compliments.

Some small items like the license plate light seal are aging and could be replaced.
I think a little time with detailing and dealing with little issues like this will really
bring the car up to a higher level with very little expense.

Cal Look window rubber looks toi be in nice shape and the glass is all good.

Interior is pretty clean .

Headliner in good condition

Looks like a little spot at the back corner that could be re-glued

Nice wood rim Nardi steering wheel

Empi trigger shifter

Nardi wheel signature

Instruments in good shape

Dash pad has a couple small cracks

Clean and solid in the jams

Stock high back seats in good shape

Rear seat as well

Under the front hood is un-restored and could benefit with a new trunk liner or carpet kit.

Looks like the car once was fitted with the factory gas heater which makes sense for
a Canadian delivery car. The holes remain and have been taped over.

Original Canadia transport decal in the drivers door jam

Feb 1971 production.
Original color is the yellow as you can see. The exterior has been repainted but this is original paint in the door jam.

Door panels in good shape

Hop on in and roll!

Rear trunk has the original liner material in place.

Stock 1600cc engine with dual carburetors runs excellent.

Could use a little detailing perhaps, but it has been very reliable for the owner.

At one point during his ownership of the car, he installed a larger displacement engine
but it was done without modification of the body structure.

In the front part of the rear trunk, he did install a simple clean sheet metal panel
to keep engine heat, smell and noise out of the interior.
It also looks like speaker holes were cut in the rear deck at some point.

Clean title and current registration

I love the clean look of these late model Type 3's.

Very solid body and chassis on this car as you can see

Transmission looks clean and it looks like new axle boots have been installed.

Electric fuel pump up front

Some cracking undercoating in the front wheel well

Pan looks good!

That rolling Derby hat style of the Notchback is undeniably cool!

Some detail pics of the ATS wheel...these are quite rare and have been
out of production for many many years!

The Type 3 range really is a great driving car.
The suspension is so solid in comparison to the Beetles.
They really feel like a "real car", very comfortable and fun.
Great visibility and ergonomics.

Simple and clean design

Neat car

Very slightly lowered stance

Front bumper has a couple dings in it

Neat cars...and again, quite uncommon on US roads, especially these later model examples.

A great car for an enthusiast that wants and fun and unique driver that can be
just tinkered with and improved by simple tasks. Detailing,
dressing up the engine room or front trunk, maybe swap out a few bolt on bits
or whatever suits you to make the car feel like yours and give you a sense of accomplishment.
In the mean time just as it is, it is a good looking and driving machine!
