1960 VW Convertible For Sale

Well summer is here and what a better way to enjoy it than top down in a red convertible?
This sweet 1960 has a great story to tell and is a fantastic survivor.
The owner has supplied us with a truly insane amount of images, but they really show the car well
so make sure you are ready to scroll all the way to the bottom if you are seriously interested in this
sweet little motorcar.

As you all well know...I love a car with a story.
A good fat paper trail like this is like reading a good novel to me
as it tells the whole story of the car and what has been done to it.
It also shows a glimpse into the personalities that held the wheel.
Someone that saves and files receipts is someone that is detail oriented
and tends to care for things with the same attention.

Seeing all the dealer receipts and such are just awesome!

So...the story of the car is as follows.
The car was sold new in September of 1959 in San Jose California
and the first owner kept the car for almost 30 years!

The car has moved around the country looking at the receipts with clues that lead
you to learn it has rolled it wheels across the highways of Yipsilate, Grand Forks, Altanta
Corpus Christi and even to its current home in South Glastonbury.

The car has a name (as all good vintage cars should)
This is Fritz.
Fritz has been with its current owner for about 15 years and has used the car
on fair weather tours and long drives with the Der Kafer Fahrer group and have even
climbed Mt Washington.  He has kept up with the maintenance
but has never had to do anything major to it, the car has always just run like a dream.

The paint was applied long ago during its history and it had a gentle fade and patina to it that is pretty pleasing.
Sadly when it was painted, it was not done in the original color, but as you look further
you will see that the exterior paint finish is perhaps one of the very only items that is not original
and untouched.  This car is a wonderful "survivor".

The original color was this off white color that you see on the dash in this shot.

The car is currently running a proper 36 horse engine, but it was not the original
matching number case...however...that matching number case is still with the car!

Seats and interior are very original and the drivers seat has a wonderful recliner.

The car according to the history and records has about 172,000 miles on it give or take.
Fritz runs very well and can cruise all day at 70mph providing you are not going up hill.
There is a little play in the steering and suspension as you would expect for a car of this age
but it has always been well maintained and is a delightful driver needing really nothing to enjoy.
The transmission is the original split case, non-syncro 1st gear unit, so you hear some gear noise
in first gear as you would expect but it does not pop out of gear or anything silly.

Just a fun and simple Beetle with a superb soul.

The absolutely dreamy part of the car is just how solid and original it is.
This is amazing to see in an early convertible!!

Even the bottoms of the doors are rock solid.

Original paint under the front and rear hoods.

Original wiring and glove box

Properly date coded speedometer

Underneath it is solid and straight wherever you look.

Newer shocks

Looks like the steering dampener was replaced at some point as well.

Impressive solid original body

At one point the owner was running 16" split window era wheels with knobby tires
for that vintage rally look and they did give the headlight buckets a rub from the backside.
The stock 15" wheels are on it now and clear everything beautifully as they should.

Mega solid...no rust, no welding, no accidents.

Under side of the engine is pretty clean and dry.

The original Karmann badge still on the quarter panel.

One small ding on the bottom side of the front apron.

Suuuuuuper solid example!!

The top has one small boo boo...

Seats are original and are in great shape.

Dash is fantastic!!
What a gorgeous color combination!!

Carpets and mats are in nice shape

I just love the interior.
If this car were mine I might consider an outside repaint in the original color just so it is all as it was when new
but the red adds a little character and is a part of the history...so I guess that decision is up to the new owner.

Very straight up front in the spare tire well.

Obviously a little paint loss under the brake fluid reservoir.

Very lovable little Beetle.

All the cool original details are in place.

Period accessory fuel gauge and sending unit.

Odd early radio with no push buttons.
Fuel gauge was dealer installed when new.

Cool little slash but exhaust tips.

There is a crack in the original windshield but the owner has a replacement for it.

Documentation actually goes back to day one with the original sales contract!

Amazingly clean engine room

Sweet period accessory ski racks

Bumper brackets and supports were chrome plated at some point.

Super solid under the back seat

The top has all the original details and fittings

I just love the originality of this car!

Period accessory bumper bars

Original headliner is showing some staining\

Some chips and scratches and paint fade...its all pretty cool though, like a well worn pair of Levi jeans
it all just feels so comfortable!

The strings under the hood are holding on the little checkered bra.

It is the original 4 tab hood.
It has had a repair at the crest where they are known to kink.

Top boot is nice

Other than the tiny band-aid repair under the back window, the top is in good functional shape.

So solid

Its a great car.
Known history back to day one.
Impressive originality and shockingly totally solid and straight
with no signs of welding or repair ever.
This is a difficult find...you just do not see them this untouched and solid very often these days.
