1971 VW Type 3 Squareback For Sale

This is a fun little Squareback for someone.
It is all original paint and interior, has piles of miles on it and shows its age, but still stands tall and has a great vibe to it.

California car since new, very solid and stock all the way through
and it is a fairly rare Automatic trans example.

Great paper trail on the car including the original purchase invoice from Snider Motors in Sacramento CA.

Great historic file of service records up into the 1990's.

In 1991 at 147,666 miles the engine was fully rebuilt along with other bits to the tune of $2800!
Interesting to note that the base price for the car prior to options, tax, etc was $2900!

The odometer now reads 61,774 miles...so that is roughly 14,000 miles on the rebuild.

November 1970 production date
The tag still in the door jam.

The engine runs well and the transmission shifts properly as well.
The car has been sitting for about a year or so.
Might be wise to give it a service before putting into daily use just to check it all out.

Amazingly clean original rear deck under the mat.

And a nice rubber mat as well.
Looks like the rear hatch seal and door seals were replaced recently as they are in great shape.
Window rubbers are all original and pretty hard from the California sun.

The original headliner has some small holes and tears but it holding firm overall.

Original set upholstery could definitely use a good cleaning
and it is dry and coming apart where the sun hits it the hardest.

Drivers seat has a notable seam split on the back and is starting to rip at the base.
Probably time to recover the seats, but it is nice to see the original material still in place on a car of this age.
The dog is a non-original recent addition that is unfortunately not being sold with the car.

Dash pad does have a couple of cracks as expected underneath the nice carpet dash pad.
Steering wheel and horn ring are in really nice shape.
Dash is clean and un-cut. Carpet is still the original as well but is showing its age.

Great color combination though... I love the off white interior with the blue exterior!

The body overall is really nice on the car with the most notable damage being the leading edge of the drivers door.
Looks like the door was over-extended at some point perhaps as it has a pretty good wrinkle there.
Easy repair if you wanted to paint the car at some point, but a part of the appeal of the car as it is right now is that
this is all original paint.  It has a ton of small scratches and chips and some worn through spots as well,
but that patina is kinda neat and is in fashion these days...they are only original once!

The paint has a decent shine to it as you can see.
From a distance it looks fantastic, but up close you see the results of a lifetime of use.

Never any wrecks front or back.
Bumpers are excellent as are the rubber impact strips.

Nice gap along the hood and everything opens and closes as it should.

Original dealer plate frames on front and back.

Under the front hood is very clean, original and untouched.

Even the original jack and paint code tag are still in place!
Sapphire Blue is the color by the way...

New stainless body trim has been installed down the sides.
A few door dings but no major damage.
A dream car to start with to restore...or as spoken before...its kinda charming just as it is.

Some paint chipping under the side trim.

Some fade through in spots on the roof as well as quite a few dark spots as you see here in this pic that are
spots where the paint has chipped away and a little surface rust has formed.

Here is a better shot of the damage to the drivers door
It extends down the height of the door below the trim.
Again...nothing major, but it is the most notable body issue.

Lots and lots of small scratches and chips as you can see down the side.
Still holds that shine though.

New tires on cleanly painted stock wheels all the way around.

All lights and lenses in place.

Paint is faded through to the primer on the license plate light.
Original dealer plate frame on the back as well as the front.

The underside is quite solid overall and still wearing its original undercoat.
A couple of dings from errant jacks, but still very solid.

On the inner corner of the passenger side of the pan there is a rust spot. I will try to get a clearer photo
of it showing the size, but it is an easily patchable spot and as you can see the rest of the floorpan looks great.

The windshield has a crack down the center but a brand new one is included in the sale.

This would be a fun car to accessorize and play with just as it is.
A roof rack loaded with goodies, some surf stickers in the windows, etc.
Its a car with a great soul and character.  Like a well worn pair of blue jeans the wear and age just
make it seem more comfortable.  It would also be a dreamy basis for a restoration as it is so complete and
original. What you see is what you get...there is no bondo hiding under anything, no hidden sins...its all here for you to see.

A fun find indeed.
The originality, the documentation, the color combination...all are just great.
There are not a lot of aircooled VWs out there with an automatic transmission either, so this is a great choice
for someone not able or desiring to have a stick shift car.
