1979 VW Beetle Convertible For Sale

This sweet silver 79 Convertible is located in Kentucky and was recently bought from the estate of a long term owner.
It is a good looking and strong running car that shows minimal wear and small flaws,
but obviously has a good curb appeal and a happy vibe to it.

1979 was the final year for the air cooled Beetle convertibles.
People scrambled to buy the last cars as they hit the dealerships
it was quite a time for VW. VW even pushed production just a little farther to keep up with the demand
but by 1980 it was all done and in the history books.
This model is an example of the Beetle at it's most refined state...a lot of things had changed since the first
Beetles rolled off the assembly line in the 40's...but the round shape and happy simple attitude remained a thread through the whole deal.

This car came off the line in September of 1978, so it is one of the early 79's
It looks like it has had one outside respray in the original silver color.

Interior looks to be quite original with average wear for the age and mileage

The odometer reads just over 20,000 miles, but I dont think that is accurate.
The burl wodd finish on the dash makes me think that this is the Champagne edition...which was the true top end model for the year.

The padded steering wheel and dashboard clock are also attributes of the Champagne edition I believe.
The interior looks quite clean...I see a little spot on the drivers side seat bottom where the vinyl is starting to come apart
but it is a small spot that may be repairable.

Vin number tag is present on the dash

Under hood tag as well...all matches up

Original trunk liner seems to be holding up quite well

Top does have a damaged spot right at the beck adge as you see here.
The glass window is in good shape and the top operates smoothly.

The car looks to have been outfitted with air conditioning at the dealer when new...the compressor is gone but the hoses and additional pulley remain.
The factory fuel injection is still in place and the engine reportedly runs well and the car is a good driver.

Bumpers look to be in nice shape and the ruber bump strips and plastic end caps are all in place.

Front end looks nice and straight with good panel fit.

Nice looking car!

Karmann body badge is in place

Tires have been dressed up with the whitewall tire rings that pinch between the rim and tire.
Give the car some class...and could be easily removed if you prefer the blackwall look.
The wheels are the correct "sport" wheels for the 79 model.

I requested some underside shots from the owner and they did their best, but not everything is visible.
What I can see here looks quite solid though.

Front apron looks good...you can see the fan and condensor for the original A/C system is all still in place.
It may be possible to revive this system and get it working again...I have heard of folks doing it.
A modern compressor for the engine room would be pretty simple to fit...there is probaby more to it than that...but where there is a will...there is a way.

The original exhaust system has been replaced by one for an earlier model...which is a bit of a shame as in order to make
it fit, some mechanic somewhere curled up the bottom edge of the rear apron to get the tweeter pipes to clear.
This could be put back of course but would require a little bodywork and some paint blending.

Looks like the factory heater boxes were also removed at this time and replaced with simple "j-tubes"

Here you can see where the original single tip exhaust should be poking out.

Headliner looks to be in nice shape...I think you could get by with keeping it and the factory pads and just replacing the outer
top material and it would look great and be a lot less expensive than doing the "complete" top.

I think I spy the top boot peeking up behind the back seat in this shot

Back seat looks great

Dash is in nice shape, carpet seems to be holding up well...protected by rubber mats.
Dash pad looks very clean

The mileage is un-documented...could this be real?
Hard to know for certain, so it is best to be cautious and say it has turned over...but if it is 122k...they were pretty careful miles.

Original door panels are holding up well...some minor warping if you get very picky...but still quite presentable

Nice

Great car and classy color combination.

There is a slight soft dent in the passenger side front fender...you can kinda catch it in this image.
Might be possible to get a paintless dent removal guy out to work that back in shape?
Those guys can work some magic!

Looks like the runningboard trim is just a little wiggly on this side, but that would be a simple fix.

Car looks just a little dirty from storage,, but a good bath and a coat of wax will do it wonders.
Overall it looks to be in nice shape all the way around.

That hole in the top is a bummer.
Certainly patchable, but you would see the patch as it is in such an obvious spot.

In closing...this looks like a pretty good car.
A few minor things to handle here and there, but overall a great car to take and enjoy as is
and do some minor work here and there as it suits you.
