1964 Type 3 Notchback For Sale
The car was painted once over the original Pearl White finish. The paint
quality is nasty and the bodywork
was obviously home-spun, but underneath it all lies a very solid example
with a good basis for a full restoration.
The car is very stock and original which is another great thing about it.
Never punked out by some kid, just one owner who drove the livin heck out
of it.
I love these Notchbacks...such a fun shape and they drive so nice...almost
feels like a "real car".
Lumpy bodywork to repair a slight scrape. The owner tells me that it was
done with "fix-all" rock putty
the type of stuff you would fix a crack in plaster with. If this is the
case, the stuff should come out of there very easy.
Front bumper has a slight frown on the drivers side.
Hood is not closed all the way in this image...it shuts well.
Good tires on the original rims with the proper original thin slot beauty
rings.
More wonderful home done bodywork...I guess the old man did the best he
could.
The current owner tells me that the guy was almost 90 years old and still
driving the car.
You gotta love that!
Looking in the corners and underneath, the car is a super solid example.
Obviously spent its whole life in a dry climate.
Very straight and proper in here.
Rockers are very solid.
Floor pans look super solid as well.
Amber topped taillight lenses.
The "S" model trim on the plate light.
Missing the 1500 emblem that goes right above it.
If you squint a little she looks gorgeous...if you close your eyes...you
can imagine her even prettier!
Good straight tail end.
Clean original trunk liner in back.
the rear deck.
Very stock 1500cc engine.
I asked the owner to sort through the service records to see how many miles
are on the engine
he is due to get back to me with that info.
The engine seems to run pretty smooth and th car apparantly drives nice.
I noticed a little leakage around the oil cooler or perhaps one of the
lines running to it...but thats about it.
Passenger side rocker and floor pan are also nice and solid.
Fender wells are super solid with no signs of rust going on.
Looking good!
Side marker lights.
A couple of very small bubbles forming on the tope edge of the passenger
fender..and a couple near the headlight ring
but very very minimal and very common spots on Type 3's for this to occur.
Speaking of the headlight rings...they are the original SB12 Hella rings.
The passenger side has a ding but the drivers side is pretty nice.
Very clean original trunk liner up front too.
Not bad for the original fiberboard material.
Body tag and fuel sticker.
original jack still in it's holder.
very straight up front.
Some runs in the respray under the hood.
OK...you have seen the outside...lets look inside and see what is going
on.
Sock dash, pad cracked, but everything complete.
Original door panels are in pretty nice condition.
Seats look pretty cool.
Original carpet is intact but worn.
Steering wheel.
98,749 miles on the odometer. According to the owner it has turned over
once.
original Blaupunkt radio.
Aftermarket ignition switch and horn button added at some point.
Glove box is in good shape.
original carpet
Original headliner is pretty nice too.
No bog holes or damage..just a little age discoloration.
Rear seat upholstery in decent condition.
z
A little messy on the rubber mats...but all original stuff.
The rear deck is a bit sun faded and a couple water spots...but it is still
there.
The most amazing part about the car in my opinion is the documentation.
The car is a great base car to restore, and the documentation is the true
icing on the cake.
In addition to the fat file folder full of service records, ALL of the
original Importation documents remain with the car
from when it was brought over to California in 1964.
The tag that was in the windshield when the car sat on the dock, all the
inspection and shipping paperwork
Receipts for the whole travel, even some receipts and claim paperwork for
some minor damage that occurred during shipping.
I have never seen this much shipping paperwork on a car like this...it
is awesome!
Correspondence back and forth...the pages go on and on.
Radio receipt for the Blaupunkt
the original European ownership book came with it too!
Wiring diagrams for the radio...
The manuals and guarantee paperwork for the radio.
And a super mint original owners manual...ever so cool.
So...she's a real diamond in the rough.
A phenomenal base car for a restoration, very complete and very solid,
it runs and drives
as it is so you can have a little fun with it before doing the restoration
work.
And the documentation that accompanies the car is simply amazing.
